Walmart now requires seeing license to use credit card

This was a new policy enacted by Ma Walmart. I challenged the cashier on this, stating that the policy was illegal with checks, so how is this any different with credit cards?

His snotty response (this was an adult mind you, and not a kid) was that Home Depot starting doing this last week, so that makes it OK, and expect to see it everywhere.

What's the point of not having your Social Security # on your drivers license if you have to show it anyways? I hope the Ma AG comes down on them for this.

It's a security measure, plain and simple. If they don't ask for ID, anyone could just steal your card and and buy whatever they wanted to. Granted most places never both to ask anyway, but there's a good reason to require customers to show it.

I think the first time you get slammed with fraud or someone steals your stuff, you'll be singing a different tune.

I get asked to see mine a lot, in lots of different places. They do it to verify that the name and picture on the license corresponds to the name on the credit card. It has nothing to do with not having your SS number on your license. The point of not having your SS on there is so no one can see it when you need to show them your license.

I hope more places institute this policy.

If the card is not signed on the back (which the OP didn't specify)...any State or establishment may request proper I.D.

yeah, I don't quite understand why your panties are in a bunch over this...I like the places that ask for my ID.

They don't ask to see any ID, they specifically ask to see your driver's license.

In MA it was made illegal to require a driver's license to use a check.

Which is totally fvcking stupid.
That means a pickpocket can look at the back, see its blank and sign it himself.
Voila, no ID needed.

And I have no idea why the OP is pissed about being asked for ID. I want them to ask.
ITS TO PROTECT YOU,FOOL!
Good god, can there really be so many people this foolish about identity theft?

Any what other ID do you have that has your name and signature on it? Military ID, sure, but not everybody has one of those.

School ID? Please. You don't have to prove who you are to get one of those.

Ummm that would be on the holder of the card as any CC co clearly states to immediately sign the card...only (I won't go there) ..wouldn't follow the issuance instructions

Not to split hairs... but how many state issued picture ID's do most people carry besides their driver's license?

Which I can understand. At an old job where I worked retail, whenever we got a check that was below a certain number (500 IIRC) and with starter checks, where the name/address info is blank, we had to write down the actual drivers license number on the check. That is totally different than just wanting to LOOK at the ID to verify the name on it.

If you don't sign the back of it I don't think they're even supposed to accept it, ID or no ID.

And I don't think it should be illegal to require ID to use a credit card, and I think the OP has gotten his panties in a bunch just for the sake of doing it.

Probably because poor city-dwelling folks generally don't have (or need) a driver's license. But when a person asks for your driver's license, that doesn't necessarily mean they won't accept a state ID card if that's what you have. They ask for your driver's license because that's the most common form of identification people have.

Why does this bother you so much?

They have to accept it, and they are supposed to ask for ID, although the smart thing would be to write in the signature box "Check ID" so a thief can't sign it himself.

I was using a brand new card once that I forgot to sign, and a store said they couldn't accept it because its not signed. I reminded them they have to check my id in that situation, handed them my id, and they accepted it.

name and sig or pic and sig?

With a real CC you are protected. If the rest of the posters are talking debit card/credit cards then that is a different matter.

Again, I don't believe they are supposed to accept it if it's not signed, and if you write "Check ID" on the back, then they should only accept it if you sign your name as "Check ID"

(That doesn't mean stores abide by that, clearly they don't, but I *think* that's what the CC companies' policies are)

Edit: Here you go: http://usa.visa.com/business/accepting_.../ops_risk_management/card_present.html

Toward the bottom:
If the card has a ?See ID? in place of a signature?

1. Request a signature. Ask the cardholder to sign the card and provide current government identification, such as a driver's license or passport (if local law permits).
2. Check the signature. Be sure that the signature on the card matches the one on the transaction receipt and the additional identification.

While I'm thoroughly disgusted with the way things are going, vis a vis privacy and personal information, this does seem a bit of an overreaction - considering that they can get all of your drivers license info from your credit card info (assuming they want to dig that deep), it does seem that asking for a DL is legitimate proof of ID, rather than an attempt to obtain personal information.

I'm far more offended that they ask for your DL to purchase cold medication.

I've seen some establishments that ask for ID when buying MAXIM.
For those of you who dont know, the american version of maxim has NO nudity. There are no notices from the government saying this magazine can only be sold to persons 18 and older.
I guess somebody got pissed and threatened the store with lawsuits.

why did you spell it "Ma?" the letter A is supposed to be capitalized unless you're referring to your mother.
