Walmart Linux Comps

Has anyone bought those cheap computers (starting at around $200) from Walmart that comes with Linux? I'm thinking of buyine one of those just to play around in Linux, dual-boot XP, and use it for general computing (internet, word processing, etc). So how are those computers like? Any cons?

What about those Internet-ready ones from Fry's that are like really crappy, loaded with Linux, and really cheap though.

Why not just dual boot on your current system to play around with linux? If you don't like it just reformat the partitions and merge 'em.. Partition Magic is your friend!

they are slow, but if you want a cheap pc, buy it get rid of the lindows crap, and put XP on it

My fastest computer is a 700mhz Athlon, so I'm sure those Walmart computers are faster. And it's about $200 so I think that's a good deal.

lindow's is far from crap--- i haven't used it personally-- but from what i've read and seen-- it looks like the most user freindly, best linux version out there.

i'm probably going to be ordering a copy when i get a spare comptuer to act as a test rig for it.

yep, tried mandrake and redhat... (liked redhat more).. but for a casual computer user who just wants a computer for basic things like email, internet, etc... most linux distros are entirely way to complex. Lindow's actually has gotten rave reveiws becuase it makes linux useable for the everyday compter user.

for all my non-basic computer stuff-- (imaging, graphics, programming, web-design, and gaming type things---) i'm going to be using a windows machine anyways--- so why mess with a linux distro thats loaded with things i'll never use and don't want to see.

Mandrake is to Lindows what WindowsNT 4 is to WindowsXP when it comes to installation.

If you're next to clueless about Linux (or hardware details), Lindows is going to be your best choice...

If you want to play around and get use to Linux, Lindows probably isn't the best flavor to do it with

You do better building something yourself. The ones at Wal-Mart are OLD sdram systems, i.e. like KM133.

Get a KM400 board a athlon 1700 and some DDR ram. Will cost less and be much faster.

There's a linux distro that boots off of and runs from cd. Includes a bunch of productivity software and such. Worth a look if you want to fool around, no worries about 'uninstalling'.

Umm.. Mandrake and Red Hat are about the 2 most user friendly Linux distros available. I havent touched Lindows, but it cant get any more GUI happy and bloated than Mandrake and Red Hat.
