i dont see whats so good about this laptop. It has only 12in screen and looks pretty bulky. Youre much better off buying latitude cpi from egay.

One great thing about this machine is that the fan is unnoticable. I had an Eslate which whirled all the time. Then I tried the Compaq 1675 with DVD and 14.1" TFT screen, it was more quiet but still whirled mildly and annoingly, then this beautiful machine, the screen is much much better than the compaq for whatever reason and it is quiet as can be. I never know when it is on unless I wake it up and find out. Get one of these if possible.

Can someone who allready has this machine please tell me what brand/model the DVD-ROM drive is? A few more questions if you don't mind. Is the drive RPC-1 or (probally :-( ) RPC-2? Any way to make it RPC-1 if it comes as 2? Thanks.

It's a Toshiba 8X drive. Why are people so concerned about Region 1 vs 2? Can't you just use TV Genie or some program like that to disable the region check rather than changing the firmware?

The thing I like about this laptop is how well thought out many of the options are. For example, you can operate the CD-ROM drive to play music without turning the laptop on or opening up the screen. There's a built in clock and battery life meter on the front. There's also a mouse "scroll" button on the touchpad so you can scroll like you would with a netmouse. You can disable the touchpad with a little button in case you're doing something and keep moving the cursor by accident. Little things like that make this laptop seem to be quality built.

No, you CAN'T use TV Genie or similar...that's the problem with RPC-2 drives. RPC-1 drives are region-free, these are what you can use TV genie with. RPC-2 drives (everything being made now) the DRIVE ITSELF is region locked. So even if you use TV Genie, the DRIVE ITSELF will refuse to play the DVD from a "foreign region"
You said it's a Toshiba 8x....I would be greatful if you can provide the exact model numver. Thanks.
BTW I hope I like it, I ordered one last night, RIGHT when they first came in. FINALLY, something to replace my IBM sTinkPad iSeries, that's going in for it's FOURTH motherboard, and several other problems, and it's not used often, less than a year old. IBM is suck. Does the included DVD player work on win2k? Also, how's the batterey life? Thanks.

Thanks UNDERCLOCKED. I brought the same HP laptop from OD during the Christmas time for the same price. Unfortunately I don't like the way it design. I end up sold it at @Bay. I prefer IBM laptop. Too bad no DVD drive build-in.

One more note, I feel like I'm talking to mysaelf. Someone made the mistake that RPC1== Region 1, RPC2==Region 2, etc. That is NOT correct. RPC 1 drives are the original DVD-ROM drives, whereas the DRIVE ITSELF had no region protection. RPC-2 drives HAVE region protection. They will allow you to change the region 5 times and that is it, they then become perminately locked to the 5th region. See why a RPC1/drive that can be converted to RPC1 is more desireable?

Donald, sounds like a great deal. Are you sure you can use the rebate with the auction? I was bummed that I missed both the walmart and fujitsu laptops, but looks like there are others available that'll work for me. I've never used egghead auctions before, was this a dutch auction, or something, or was the price so low because there weren't a lot of bidders. Any thoughts on them you want to share would be great.

Thanks,

Tiger
