"Walmart Express" to take on Dollar stores

Saw one of these traveling through rural NC last week...

Older article:

Walmart Express is intended to be a two-pronged strategy: stores in small towns that aren't big enough to support a full-size Walmart, and stores in big cities where building a supercenter is impractical.

Wal-Mart is experimenting with a Walmart Express prototype for urban markets in Chicago, to open later this summer.

It plans to build 15 to 20 Walmart Express stores, focusing on Arkansas, North Carolina and Chicago, by the end of its fiscal year in January 2012.

"This is about access to breadth of assortment" and everyday low prices, said Anthony Hucker, vice president of strategy and business development, which is spearheading the new format.

If the retailer gets the prototypes right for both urban and rural areas, it sees the potential to build about 350 Express stores per year, the same pace as the height of its super center expansion in 2005 and 2006.

Walmart's U.S. business has been chipped away by dollar stores, which have adroitly maneuvered the post-recession economy.

Dollar stores, with their small size and convenient locations ideal for quick shopping, have added brand-name products and become more competitive on price. They're also expanding quickly, opening stores closer to customers' homes, an advantage in an era of high gas prices.

We have a Dollar General close by and it's a lot more convenient than Wally, excellent prices and no 1/2 mile of walking to get 2-3 items. The Wally near us is always short on cashiers too, not unusual to wait 30 min. to get checked out.

The store will employ between 20 and 40 people, chosen from among 650 applicants, according to a company spokesman Crain's spoke with, which is markedly lower than the "up to 400 new jobs" the Chicago Mayor's Office's Facebook page said were "coming to Chatham" with the opening of the new store. [UPDATE: The 400 new jobs will come with the supercenter that is due to open across the street from the new express store in the spring, according to a Wal-Mart press release.]

wat?

The food prices at my local WalMart suck. You can find a couple cheap things, but most of the prices are in line with a higher end regular grocery store(sub premium). Add to that, almost every order I get has items where the price was mis-marked on the shelf, and I'm pretty irritated with them. I still go cause it's in convenient walking distance, but I'm not impressed at all.

I like Dollar Tree. You can get good food there if you keep your eyes open. The problem is some of it isn't worth a dollar. That's how they make their money. The stuff that isn't such a great deal subsidizes the stuff that is, and many people are unaware of what things cost. I especially like the ultra-pasteurized shelf milk. My daughter likes the taste, and I like keeping it for emergency backup in case I run out of regular milk. I was scoring feta cheese cheap as shit at the dollar store for awhile. They haven't had it in a few months :^(

Sense, that makes none.

Sounds like this is more going after Walgreens and CVS than dollar stores. At least, in the urban centers.

This is what it sounds like to met as well. I can't really speak for other large cities, but in Philly there were drug stores on every corner and only a few dollar stores. Walmart/Target was reasonably far from the center, definitely a bus or cab ride away.

Will it be just as shitty as a normal Wal-Mart or will the crap factor scale down along with the size?

LOL, I will say one good thing about Wally, their automotive items are a LOT cheaper than Advance, I recently did an oil change and tranny fluid change, I bought both at Advance, couple of days later I was at Wally for vacuum bags and picked up a quart of 30W oil for my lawnmower, Wally was $1.55/Qt cheaper on the same oil and $1.85/Qt cheaper on the same tranny fluid. I'm not one to quibble over small price differences but F*** Advance for any more fluid purchases, looks like they are charging too much IMO..

Walmart Home to take over Home Depot and Lowes
Walmart burgers and tacos
Walmart hospital and healthcare
Walmart funeral services
etc.
etc.
etc.

I literally would not wait 30 minutes to buy anything, anywhere. I would walk away from a cart full of groceries.

This happens at my Wally although there is usually something there you gotta have (coffee for me) so you just wait it out. What sucks is the self-serve lanes are gone for good and less than half of the registers are manned..

DG is awesome. It's basically the modern version of the classic "general store".

Dollar General is pretty crappy quality (and honestly, the prices on a lot of stuff are not deals). A Wal-Mart Express actually sounds preferable.

I buy all my household needs from a small grocery with fantastic prices and a cvs. I dont know what walmart can offer me other than longer lines and dealing with angry customers. Saving 2 dollars which will probably be eaten up by gas, time and traffic isn't worth the stress of going to a busy shopping area.

What happened to the self checkout lanes?

From a consumer point of view, Walmart is awesome. They have almost everything you could imagine in a single store making it convenient, then you can even pickup some groceries on the way out.

Sadly, it does make it very hard for the small local guys to make a living.

No kidding - I bought headlight bulbs at Autozone for $19.95/pr and later found them at WalMart for $12.

WTF.
