Well, this is interesting.

Went to Walmart last week. Bought an inverter. Attempted to pay with my check card; couldn't remember the PIN number (it's a new card, and I've never used the PIN before). Cancelled that transaction, paid with my CC. Well, I just got around to checking the statements... They charged me for it on BOTH cards. The reciept is long gone, but it DEFINITELY showed the Discover Credit transaction, rather than the Visa Debit transaction.

WhoTF am I supposed to complain to first? Or should I just eat the $38.73 and never shop Wallyworld again?

Go to the Walmart store first (after you shower and wash your hair). Since you don't have the receipt, bring your checking bank statement or print the online banking. Also bring your cc receipt (or online banking). They can lookup the transaction and notice that they were made at the same time. Chances are they will refund your debit card.

Contact the bank and tell them what happened as opposed to Discover. Discover fvcked me over with a chargeback from Blockbuster, which was clearly their fault, yet DC sided with them. Stupid gdamn fvckers.

It's always best to contact the merchant first for resolution before bitching and whining to your bank.

:)

Well, considering I legitimately paid with the credit card... The hell good would THAT do?

I shall take the Nagus' word under advisement and contact Walmart as soon as I get my paper statement confirming that this went through (should be FAIRLY soon).

this used to happen where I work, and head office would usually notice it and fix it before the customer would even make it back to the store.... but the store should be able to fix it for you. Just bring in your statements showing the two equal charges on the same dates, and they should have records in their store showing that only one purchase was made for that amount. If the manager/supervisor doesn't feel like helping you, he/she is just being an ass, because they will have a record (electronic or paper) of every transaction. Especially one that recent.

edit: i've never worked at walmart, but that's my experience from where I worked.

There are two other possibilities which may "fix itself"
  • 1) Your online banking is showing an authorization (which appears to be a debit) for Walmart. These items usually take 3-5 business days to "hard post", this time may have already passed since you purchased this last week.
  • 2) Walmart may have discovered the problem when they did their nightly/weekly reconciliation. They are most likely in the process of correcting the problem by refunding your checking account for the erroneous debit entry.

Wait until you receive your checking account statement, physically go into Walmart and speak with their customer service. It should take them about 5 minutes to fix.

Interesting. Upon second examination of the credit card statement, the purchase 10 minutes later (at the front register, as opposed to the one in electronics) is absent. I got free underwear.
