Walmart Department Managers

My sister was a sales associate for Walmart for two years. She accepted a position as Department Manager. She received a 45 cent raise for doing this. Over a period of five years, she moved to several different areas, to get more experience in the store.

Her final department manager position was horrible. She hated it and decided to step down and return to sales associate in a department she previously worked in. Upon doing this, she lost 70 cents an hour.

How is this right?

Shouldn't they have taken the 45 cents back only? That was all she received when she became dept. manager. It seems they are punishing her for being manager and then returning to "regular associate."

CLIFFS:
1) Sister sales associate
2) Becomes dept. manager
3) Gets 45 cent raise
4) Five years later resigns as dept. manager
5) Loses 70 cents

yikes.

how much do dept managers make anyway?

Different in each department payscale and then raise. Generally 45 cents more than everyone else.

Seems fair to me. She knew what the pay was for that position she previously held. May seem unfair due to the amount of time she has been there, but maybe she should consider moving elsewhere if there are no longer advancement opportunities there for her.

this reminds me of the walmart commerical they ran on the local radio stations. the walmart dept manager brags about how great it is working at walmart with all the wonderful people and how she started out as a cart pusher and worked her way up to dept. manager in 10 years....then at the end she said she was promoted to dept manager couple months ago and strives to be the regional manager...

it cracked me up to learn she spent that long as a peon and brags about it...

And why shouldn't they?

That's a pretty crappy thing for her to do. It's normally career suicide to step down and not up.

45 cents extra per hour to become a Dept Manager? Wow, that's LOW!!!! I thought it would be at least 45 percent increase.

So what a dept manager make per hour? At least 10 bucks per hour I hope.

some people are never promoted - no matter what the company.

If I was offered $.45 an hour raise to become a Dept Manager I'd decline in a heart beat. That extra $.45 and hour isn't worth the stress, no matter how little it was, to take on more responibilites.

If your sister is over the age of 18 I recommend a new job with a different company. If she's still in H.S. she can stick it out to graduation then find a new job or goto college. Either way get the h3ck away from Wal-Mart. Worst Employer Ever.

QFT, they really are that bad, ive never seen a company mistreat employees the way walmart does.

Not just that, managers are salaried employees. Hope they didn't demand unpaid overtime.

The only reason I could think of for the difference between 45 and 70 cents is if she received higher raises as a manager over the five years compared to an associate. Don't they do an annual performance review with a merit + cost of living raise (even a small one)?

I used to work there, and your pay is determined by what area you work in. So depending on the department, it is entirely possible for her to lose more than 45 cents, and she would have known this prior to changing job areas.

Well its different, theres "Team leaders" and "dept managers"

Managers are salaried employees, generally a store has 7-10 depending on its size.

Team leaders do the same thing, but they a lower in the food chain, and still hourly.

And walmart doesnt give overtime if you work in a store IIRC.

Raises are based on performance, last i knew, it was a percentage increase, and was an all, some, or nothing type deal. The managers would then find every little thing they could nitpick you on over the course of the year to get it as low as possible.
