How does it work? Gives an error code that you look up? Is there some standard that is followed by laptop manufacturers to return standard error codes?

Every BIOS vendor has POST codes, which IIRC are sent by the BIOS to port 0x80.

All you need is a card and debug LED to read them out.

They make debug cards for desktop, but I had not yet seen one for laptop.
