Simple: I have no overhead lighting. So I want to stick a switch on the wall, which will then control a power-strip/outlet plug. Preferably something that doesn't require electrical wiring (i.e. a plug in thing, not actually replacing the wall socket itself).

What do you guys use?

I've seen this: http://www.meritline.com/evertek-remote-controlled-switch-socket-bh9936-2---p-74883.aspx

But that's not super wall-mountable. So something like that, but with a nice rocker-switch or something would be great. What do the rest of you, who don't have overhead lighting, use?

Thanks!

For something permanent I'd just run new wire, if fishing is really not possible, you can use EMT and surface mount everything. It actually gives it a cool industrial look. You can also use just plastic wire mold, but I'd go with EMT for the looks, if it's going to be visible. Also not sure how you'd connect the wiremold to the junction boxes, as it would need to be code compliant. EMT is designed for this.

If any of that is really not an option, look at arduino and Xbee wireless modules. I never played with the Xbee but I imagine it's fairly easy to use. You can then have a switch or sensor of sorts that wirelessly sends a signal to turn a relay on/off. You'll obviously still need wiring going to the light itself though.

Ironically enough, my living room is very industrial, but the whole point of this was to avoid running more wires and/or doing electrical work. As the OP said, I've found power strips/outlets that can be controlled via remote, but I was just seeing if people had specific solutions they liked, and if there were better wall-mounted switches out there than the one I linked.
