Walking with Laptop Running

Hey guys-

I'm absolutely furious. Outlook Express hung on me twice today while shutting down, so both times, my laptop didn't shut down correctly and I wasn't careful enough to check. So I walked probably 1/4 of a mile with it in my bookbag - one of those side-slung ones. Lukily I had a lot of books in it, so I suppose the motion is dampened. I haven't had any problems with it yet, but it is quite disconcerting and I was about to shoot someone when I got back to my room because this is mine. My baby.

Anyway, in general, how susceptible to damage is a laptop hard drive when it is running? I'm going to assume there is some read-write, Windows is always doing something in the background. I guess a side-bag has a bit more rolling motion so it is better. But any experiences or ideas?

Hmn, well, mine I have held it *almost* sideways while running n doing a bit of I/O and nothing happened. However, i suggest you do a surface scan on ur hardisk. If it's alright, then good on you. ;)

Laptop drives are manufactured to withstand a certain amount of shock and vibration forces. If you were only walking and making sure not the slam your bag into railings or walls, then I wouldn't think there is anything to worry about. I have clients who drive around with laptops running and they seem to do okay (though I wouldn't recommend it).
