maps.google.com

Just noticed a new feature this morning when I was getting directions... walking directions, and in a city like boston, driving and walking (biking as well) tend to vary greatly as far as which route to take.

Couldn't find any posts about it, so I figured I'd share my discovery. Also, google is smart to warn you "not to walk in areas you are not familiar with." Reminded me of mom's warnings years ago haha.

I'm waiting to hear stories of google maps telling people to walk through the ghetto. Maybe they'll develop alternate routes that avoid poor people..

Google maps keeps getting better and better. I like the Terrain feature that shows topo maps. They need to get this feature in their mobile client.

I also like that you can edit the locations where your search shows up. If you search for your address and it isn't quite right, you can move the location marker.

Yes they have public transportation maps as well, so it tells you how to walk to the nearest station, the route / transfers you take, and walking to your destination. Pretty damn convenient, you can also do street view so you can get a better idea of the neighborhood.

I used it on Sunday. I looked at the map and decided that it wasn't the shortest way so on the way back I developed my own shortcut plan... bad idea :p I didn't have to go through a bad neighborhood or anything, but my 3 mile walk back ended up being more like 4 miles since there were some neighborhoods without sidewalks and I didn't feel like walking on their grass or in the street, there was some construction as well, and my Plan C of cutting through a park on the map actually ended up being dense woods on uneven terrian so I had to go around it.

Oh well ;)
