Walking along the street, you notice a wallet.

It contains $5,000 in cash but no name or address. What would you do? Would you alter your decision if inside you found the name, address, and picture of either a wealthy-looking young man or a frail-looking old woman?

Most people say if they found a wallet full of cash on the street they would return the money; do you believe them? Most also think their own lost wallets would never be returned; do you feel similarly? How do you explain this contradiction? Would you help fund an experiment designed to find out whether people are actually honest to return cash-filled wallets?

Reader's Digest did an experiment like this a few years back. They went to a bunch of different cities & dropped convincingly real wallets (eg photos, credit cards, etc.) & then watched them. I don't remember the results, though.

I would personally turn the wallet in to the nearest police station, & then claim it the minute the wait period expired.

Oh yes, I would RUN to the nearest police station, and give it to the policeman. (Last anyone will see of that)! But it will make me a much better person!

BTW - This topic has been done many times before.

Well congrats Zapster with having that great knowledge of this being posted before.

I'll try to find them, but in the meantime, I'll fathom to guess they weren't so detailed.

If there was any way to tie it to a person, credit card, name and address, whatever, I would give it back to that person. I wouldn't give it to the cops because I don't trust cops. If there was no way to tell whose it was, finders keepers. I'm not just saying this, I've done it before.

Happened to me before. $600 in cache. Everything else intact as well. Called the person up, told them and they came to pick it up. Offered me $50 for being honest as well.

I look at it like this. If MY wallet was lost I would hope the person that found it would do the same. Unfortunately, this world is pretty far away from that, but at least there's hope.

Cheers!

hmm if i searched it and didn't find a name or address.. on the first search. i might keep it,
but most have some, form of id in it, even if it's just an old reciept from a store, or a deposit slip, a store card......

If there was a name in it, I'd return it. If not, I'd probably keep it.

I'd return it with everyting in it.

About a month ago I was at the Mall of America and stopped by a cash machine. I went to put my card it and when it wouldn't go in, I looked at the screen and noticed that it was asking if I wanted another transaction. It would have been simple for me to push "Yes" and clean the unfortunate chap out.

I pressed "No", took out the card, and threw it through the security gate in a nearby bank, hopefully so whoever opened the bank the next morning would take care of it.

I've been ripped off before, and I know the incredibly sinking feeling I get when something like that happens. If I can save someone from that, I will.

i would return the money. 5k is a lot and picturing in the position of me losing the money would make me cry, and knowing that it was returned, well u get the point. I believe in that whole weird mystery and universal saying of "what comes around goes around":)

Having attained massive wisdom from the Feringi Board I would immediately scan the bills & using my color printer duplicate them. Then put the duped bill copies in the wallet & mail ( from a neighboring town ) it to the cops, being careful to remove any fingerprints from the wallet.

I would then run an add on fleabay & to sell additional copies of the duped bills.

Then I would post under an assumed Feringi name & pump my fleabay ad as a great deal.

I had something like that happen to me in HS. I was going home when the guy in front of me dropped a wad (several thousand) of cash and went into a bank. I grabbed it and returned it to him. He was kind of stunned and just said thanks.

A few weeks later, I won $1,000 on WPLJ in NYC by naming the song of the day. Went out a week later and bought myself a Commodore 64 with all the trimmings.

Karma baby!

<< I'd probably take some for my trouble and mail it back. >>

Heh :) If there was NO information about an owner, I would keep it.

$5000...what would I do...

well if there was an address or any info I would return it...since there's not...this is what I'd do....

order (22) 1.2GHz Tbirds... Test them for OC (they'll all do at least 1300...some will do 1400+) and resell them here on the board.

But then that might be a lot of hassle for only 700-800 dollars profit.

Honestly I'd pay off my bills...probably about 3500 dollars...the rest I'd add on to my system

get rid of this crappy addtronics case (I know its "awesome" but I hate it heh) upgrade ram, hard drives etc. heh

Normally, I would call the person, and bring it back to them or mail it back.
But, $5000 is supisious enough for me to let the police deal with it, because the wallet could belong to a criminal.
