Wal-Mart trys to keep up with Costco at sams by...

as much as i hate the experience of being anywhere in a 400 foot radius of a costco, i love being a member because they sell pretty much everything i could ever want, generally at great prices. staples like milk, cheese, bread, booze, and snacks are so cheap it's not even funny. occasionally you can do better on electronics or things like that, but then you see Phillips compact florescents for less than a dollar each and you cream your jeans all over again. the great thing about costco is most of their products are name-brand, the good stuff. and they rotate merch by seasons so you can stock up on a wider variety of goods than even a warehouse can hold.

Havent' seen one of those in ages.

Probably would have never had them if those signs were required to tell the whole story...

Proudly Made in the USA by Arkansas rednecks

Sorry, i dont understand your statement.

is that a jab at ppl from arkansas?
is that jab at stuff made in the usa?

sorry, i really don't get it.

I'm just saying that the whole idea behind "Made in the USA" is a little, uh... glib. Despite the fact that theoretically you are supporting the American economy by buying American made goods, in most cases cheap goods are cheap goods no matter which country they are made in and are manufactured with employees from the very lowest of classes (right above homeless). I'd reckon that most of the people who look for the "Made in the USA" sticker also happen to profess hatred in most other situations for rednecks, white trash, poor people, etc.

Wal-Mart is like people's hate for Bush. There are these huge groups that hate everything they do. Hey Wal-Mart is a company with a sole purpose of making money. Any way of cutting cost they come up with is genius even if that means firing people who make too much to hire a person for just above minimum wage to do the exact same mindless job requiring zero skill level. I say this with my mom working their as a dept mgr. It was her choice to work there just like everyone else. I for example love shopping there, low low prices. Sure Target is nice inside but I don't give a flying &$it about the atmoshphere of where I shop. I go where the prices are low.

Walmart kills me. I bought a wallet there and it barely lasted a couple months. Quality is complete crap.

For stuff like shaving cream and toothpaste you can't go wrong though.

Erm Isn't it true that we are PAYING people in other countries for the outsourced work? The quality of the goods may be the same but it won't be going to a similar class of people otherwise there wouldn't be any money in outsourcing. That's aside from the fact that buying domestic products encourages local industry growth and keeps the money in the country.

I wonder what other fake goods they sell. Other luxury goods companies should be investigating Sams.

They are very upfront about what is fake and what isn't. They walk the fine line between legal and illegal.

What they do is legal, but in no way ethical.

Maybe I'm wrong here but it usually poor white trash rednecks like me that look for those stickers.............not like you see too many of those stickers anymore though

White trash or not, they sell a lot of the same crap Target does, but for cheaper. For example, last week I bought a set of Michelin wiper blades for $10 and $12 each (2 different sizes for my car) at Target, then found the identical ones at Wal-Mart for $6 each. They didn't charge more for longer length ones like Target does. This is just one example but it's visible everywhere.

Saving money on everyday stuff > prettier store with swankier clientelle

yeap. but some people hate walmart so much that they claim the company's will sale inferier goods (even though they same as target).

though i do agree walmart has over the top tactics in dealing with company's. the lastest was with Coke (wich got coke sued).

I do not love walmart but i do not hate it. I shop there because they are the cheapest place in town.

though i am starting to get disgusted with Sams club. i swear 90% of the stuff actually cost more.

I worked at a sams club, some of the stuff has significant markup and is nowhere near cost. As the "club" would like you to think.

Featured items (unless they are one time buys or seasonal) are usually not even on sale, they are just merchandised for the time of year.

There are some GREAT deals there though, silverware, gatorade, ramen noodles, pretzels, cereal, TP, paper towels, Peanuts, most Candy, and bottled water are obscenely cheap.

Soda/Pop, Meat, Canned goods, Electronics, Games, Computers, and their respective service plans are as high if not higher than competitors. (I was on the merchandising team, this was my job)

Almost their entire Hardlines section of the store is cheaply made junk with a stalky markup.

Their produce is cheaply priced but HORRIBLE quality... All produce, even the stuff that isnt supposed to be frozen, is loaded on freezer trucks. Damaged produce makes it to the shelves and often the distributors will hide damaged/spoiled fruit in the middle of the container to hide it.

Costco isnt all innocent either, although they treat their employees far better, they do the same marketing and merchandising tricks... Costcos sale items are often slowly marked up over a long period of time then marked down to or very slightly below the original price. Our managers discovered this while price matching Costco on certain items.

I'm not arguing that buying American made goods doesn't help the economy. Just arguing about the psychology of "Made in th USA".

If you don't like WM/Sams or any big companies, then take your business elsewhere and stop whinning. If you think WM/Sams are selling craps, then don't buy their stuffs, enough said. I am sure Target/Kmart/other large companies are only selling American made high quality goods for lower prices. :Q

I don't care what in a name of a business, as long as they give me a good deal..ie. the best bang for my bucks. For example, I stopped by WM yesterday and bought some Cambell soups and Powerade <$1.44 for large cans and $1.75 for 64oz bottle, best prices anywhere>.

The last time I checked, I didn't see any employees were being forced to work at WM/Sams with a gun at their heads. It is up to me to get the best values for my money, not to worry about how much a clerk/cashier/stockboy makes at WM/Sams. If you want to "do the right thing", so why don't you give half of your paycheck to those poor underpaid workers?

For those of you that say "let buy only American made goods". I am sure that everything in your household are made in American, right? News for you, global comanies are overlap each other, there is no such exclusive, one company/one country anymore (especiall the large ones such as Fortune 500).

For the record, I never work for WM or Sams or any of their divisions/companies or own any of their stocks.

Wally World is the epitome of low class. From the Waltons all the way down to the clientele.

You know the Waltons?

I know how they conduct business and what they stand for. That is all I need to know.

then you really do not know much.

the Waltons (well the ones who started walmart) were good people. they gave to many local charities and promoted Buy US 1st (locally if possible). They had low prices and good products.

the only reason walmart is what it is today is once sam died the walton family was not running it. sure there are some on the board of directors but they do not have final say. now the board makes all decisions.

I gotta imagin Costco does the same crap and i really do not care how they treat the employees. Where Costco shines is the extended warenntee everyone here talks about.

If costco was not 40 min away i would check them out.

Walmart pays what the market will bear for labor. If they did not no one would work there.

Wlamart is in a unique postion that allows them to get better deals on products.

Walmart has the most efficient distribution system in the world.

And for thoose that say walmart does not care.

They beat the red cross to New orleans and many other Gulf Coast areas.

They beat the Red Cross to The WTC.

While you may not like it Walmart is a company that is responsible to it's stock holders. They have done very well for there stock holders and provice consumers an option to get lower proces products. I f you want to buy a computer and talk to someone who knows what the hell they are talking about it can't do that. However if you want to buy a cheap computer then they can help.

NO EMPLOYER is REQUIRED to proved anything thing more than minimum wages and Minimum benifits (dis payments) and unlike many of the so called "good companies" I think that they do all right by both their clientel and their employees. The typically pay ABOVE minimum wage, provide the option of group health for EVERY EMPLOYEE as well as provide a discount on purchased items.

 Wal-Mart sells a lot of the same crap that all other stores do. Your response is just the typical ATOT response when it comes to large mega-corporations.

Too bad you're so far wrong.

<3 Costco (large mega-corporation)
<3 Target (large mega-corporation)

I would've just quoted amdforever2, but didn't want to bother quoting two people in one reply.

I think it has less to do with Wal-Mart's status as a mega-corporation and more to do with its country roots.

For example, ATOTers probably love Google...

But then there's Microsoft and Apple...

Walmart doesnt care, they go for PR moments.

The waltons still have majority share of the company, they DO have a say in how it works.

When sam walton died and the inheritors took over, the company dove morally.

Porn is so expensive, why cant Wal-Mart start selling that stuff to bring down it's price? I mean at first it would be made in America, but eventuay over time like everything else they can slowly shift the porn productiuon side to China, I know this would mean no more hot blondes but Chineese actors or not, porn is still porn and it makes willy happy. Bring down the cost of PORN!

I support American Manufacturing and I do not have a hatred or nor am I a redneck/unbathen white trash. Buy American and you create more jobs for People to work and that keeps them off of welfare, it give their kids food to eat, and sparks other job creations. I am a patriot of the USA and not to a Communist Chineese Goverment. Our boys did not die so that you can support a nation that said it would not mind dropping a nuke on Los Angeles. Buy American and save the USA from fiscal drowning.
