Come Feb they will only allow you to use it as a Debit Card (ie- input code) which for most people incurs a fee (my bank charges $1.50). This is BS because it's really no different from writing a check.

Look for alot more people writing checks (as if the Wal-Mart lines aren't slow enough already).

-meant to put this in OT, but I guess it will do here.

There is an easy way around that, don't shop at Wal-Mart.

Your bank charges you for debit transactions? I suggest you change banks because you are getting ripped off. Most banks (including mine) I have heard of don't charge at all for debit transactions, only to withdraw cash from an ATM.

I always use as debit when I can. Wachovia doesn't charge me anything. Get a new bank.

If you use it as a credit card, the store you puchase in can put a hold for an ammount larger than your purchase on your real money checking account. When they do it on your credit card, it doesn't matter since the money doesn't exist until your bill shows; it's a wash.

With a debit card, you're dealing with real money in a real bank account.

I mainly use free checking, and every bank I've used so far charges for debit, but not as CC.

I'll look around a little bit more.

Problem is, there aren't that many banks anymore. The two locals I used in the past 3 years were both bought up by Citizens, which does not offer free anything.

I've had 4 banks in 5 years.

Will they still be accepting visa or mastercard credit cards? I knew visa is always advertings that the check card is good anywhere the credit card is. Is it the same with mastercard?

This was brought up here about a month ago.

Walmart is doing this for strictly political and power gain. They want to dictate the rate of the transactions.

Isn't it more likely that they want to reduce transaction costs?

I agree totally. I haven't bought anything at Wal-Mart for years now. Most of the products in Wal-mart are made in China anyways (slave goods).

Just a little correction for you there :)

How come they have so many American Flags plastered everywhere in all the Wal-Marts? "Buy American!" (just don't look at the label) ;)

It actually more than just the Chinese slave goods for my reason to not shop there. Wal-mart is pushing the RFID technology in which every item you buy will be tracked. No thanks.

Unfortunately they are building a Wal Mart near my house. Someone needs to tell the city planners that red neck chain stores are not good.

Wal-Mart = Always Low Priced Evil. But honestly by accepting check cards the merchant pays a rate (If I can Recall) somewhere between 1.25~3% per transaction.

That is a lot of money !

It's to lull Middle-America into a false sense of security. :)

That's another they they have mandated. They told Suppliers you must use RFID Technology or you will no longer be a supplier for us.

I'm shocked that banks charge you to use their debit card. This is news to me. Wow.

It's legal- a vendor must take cash, but other than that they can take whatever form of payment they want. Now it is against Mastercard policy to take one form of payment and deny the other. So if they take "Mastercard" they're required to take the check cards, along with the CCs and Debit cards. I bet you Mastercard makes an exception for Wal-Mart.

As for Debit Card fees, as I said, I think most "free checking" accounts are limited, so they charge you fees for as much as possible. I have yet to find a "free checking" account at any bank that doesn't charge a fee for debit card useage away from the bank. When I am lucky enough to find a bank that suits my needs, they get bought up by a bank I tried to get away from (Citizens mainly).
