Wal-mart is really going down hill

I was at the electronics counter at wal-mart today and saw one of the employees standing around. There were only two employees I saw helping customers, and he was not with anyone.

I asked him if he could check me out. He told me no that he was clocked out and would not check me out. I asked him "would not or could not" and he said "would not". I told him I didn't care and that it was customer service, and that if he wouldn't check me out he should go find someone who would. He ignored me and walked away.

I found a department manager who told me it was policy he not check me out while he wasn't clocked in.

I can't believe this is actual policy? What happened to customer service? This is why I do most of my shopping online.

You expected him to work while he was off the clock?

Fail.

Meh, I wouldn't have pushed it on him. You must understand that the guys that work at Wal-Mart don't exactly have a lot of pride...I might have done the same thing.

Ok it would have taken 2 minutes. Plus he was still wearing his uniform. It's not my fault he wasn't clocked in.

If I'm at work but not actually getting paid while I'm there I still help people. Always have, no matter how shitty my job is. Or if I really don't want to, I find someone who can.

WTH is wrong with customer service these days asking for 2 minutes of time and "you can't be serious"?

If I was working there I would have provided GOOD customer service said "Hey I'm off the clock, but two minutes to help a customer isn't the end of the world" and would have done my job.

He probably spent more than 2 minutes not being productive that day anyway. It would have averaged out.

You can get fired for working off the clock.

That's news to me. If you can get fired for working off the clock at wal-mart, why am I always reading attacks on wal-mart that they "forced" people to work off the clock?

I don't know how Walmart works but we have a pretty cool Point Of Sale system where I'm working that only allows you to log on to the till while you're clocked in for work. After you've clocked out it wouldn't be possible to log into the till (under your own name, at least) to help a customer. It's possible that this guy may not have been able to help.

He probably shouldn't being hanging out on the floor, in uniform, off the clock. However, most companies have a strict policy of working off of the clock. So, yeah he shouldn't have checked you out.

Walmart has been sued by many states for forcing employees to work of the clock, including settling with Minnesota just this month which cost them $54 million. I think they have to pay over $200 million just to four states.

Besides that, it is hard enough to get service out of most Walmart employees when they are on the clock.

The last time when I really shopped there, I had just arrived with my two small kids, and as always, one of them had to use the bathroom as soon as we walked in. The urinal was way too high, so I opened the only stall door, and there was shit everywhere. On the walls, all over the toilet, floor, and the toilet was clogged and all the way to the top. I walked out and let the head cashier person know about it, and she told me that there was an emergency button above the toilet and I should go back in there and push it. I told her that if there was, it too was probably covered in shit, and if she could just call or radio someone about it that would probably be a better idea. She just kind of rolled her eyes and said she would try.

When I was checking out 30 minutes later, she walked over and said that she called someone about it and that they were going to clean it up soon. I just thought that lifting that radio from her belt must have been a tough assignment for her to be so proud about that accomplishment.

Even if that is so he should have went and found another employee for me.

Chances are since he was off the clock he couldn't check you out anyways. He probably gave you attitude after asking such a stupid question as yours after he told you he wasn't clocked in.

Because the company gets in trouble when they have people do it, so when a company obeys the rules, they'll go after people who do it, since the company will ultimately get in trouble for it. Most stores aren't trying to get hit with lawsuits.

If she had a radio she was probably a manager. Pretty sad even a manager can't get their own people to do anything. I am done with wal-mart after this.
