It's speculation at this point, but here's what I'm seeing:

The WalMart picture shows a 'Viore' badge, black on silver, on a black set with
2 silver buttons on the lower right corner.

The Viore V42PD45M/S is an HDTV. It comes in black/silver, but has the 'Viore'
badge as silver on black or silver on silver. There are a number of small buttons,
color co-ordinated with the case. Only visible in pictures of the silver model.

There are references to an older model, the V42PD5M, which is no longer sold.
One buyer tried to get info from Viore when the HDTV models first came out and
he was Emailed the V42PD5M manual. That manual states the resolution at
852x480.

So, until we can get some direct info fromWalMart, I'm thinking these are the
older V42PD5M EDTV models. Wish it was the HDTV version.... :(

I called up walmart customer service at the store I will be going to friday morning and asked about the laptop deal. I said that I got a flyer with one for $488 but the flyer available on teh walmart website says it is $378. They told me that there is going to be three seperate laptop deals and all three were going to be available at my store. The $488, the $378, and astonishingly enough, he told me that there was going to be a $300 laptop as well.

Was anyone else able to get the $500 computer PM'ed to the $149 one? That is a KILLER deal...man the 17" LCD, even if crap, is nearly worth that alone. Of course, I'm sure the couple they had at my Walmart are long gone... I'm no BFer, I sleep till 1 or 2pm. :)

I was planning on raising hell if that was the price as they have been advertising on TV that they would have a laptop for $378. I was 3rd in line so i was definately set to get one.

Got the Laptop at the store near 60506.

It's just what I was looking to get my folks.

I imagine some less technical people will be disapointed with it. It boots up dog slow since mine seemed to default to using 128Megs of the 256 for video. Imagine booting XP with 128Megs. Need to go into the bios to set the shared video ram down.

Adjusted it down to 32Megs and dropped in my spare 256 stick. It's very quick for a sub $400 laptop.

It was a flat screen crt, not an LCD, but still a great deal. I have a Dell 19" flat panel I am pairing it with. The reviews of the 17" crt are very good. TigerDirect sells the refurbed tower without the monitor for almost $400 and when I checked Ebay someone had sold one for well over 400 using buy it now.

I picked up the Viore 42" EDTV plasma display at Walmart's Black Friday sale. The unit was manufactured in October and the model number is PDP4210EA. It has NTSC and ATSC tuners and nice handles on the rear.

From avsforum and others, it seems most likely this is an Akai product. The Orange County, Cali Fry's Black Friday ads had an Akai 42" HDTV plasma display for $1299.

I could not make myself pull the trigger, but did put one on layaway. I have never seen it out of the box. Can you please post how you like it after setting it up?

Thanks

Their price was $178 on the LCD and $378 on the notebook! From what I remember the specds were ther same. I think I could drive that far to save over $100.

Edited to brag:

I have my own bragging to do. I, thank goodness, missed the notebook. I say thank goodness because they had an Emachine desktop that was loaded with 512 meg ram, AMD 3000+ 64 bit or whatever processor (was not an AMD person so am not familiar with how they are named), dvd/rw, 80 gig drive, good video card, and 17" flat screen monitor that was priced at a markdowned price of $500. I asked if they would match the price of the one at Best Buy that had a lower speed processor, 256 meg ram, lower level video card, and only a cd/rw (as I recall) that Best Buy had priced at 149 with very few per store. The person I asked at 5 a.m. said no, so i went on my way. Later I went back through and the asst mgr was helping some guy who asked if they would pricematch. They had 2 in stock and I put my hand on one as he made up his mind. He said he would do it!!! Then the fart who asked said he would take both and I said the hell you will, so we about got into a fist fight. Turned out they had 3, so the greedy bastrd took two. But, what a machine for 149!

Moral: Do not assume prices are the same from store to store.

Now the ad includes a 42" plasma for $997.

Correction to post:

Talked to local Wal-Mart and they said there were many pricing mistakes made in the circulars. They have corrected prices in the computer and all stores will supposedly charge the same, so the notebook should be $378 everywhere it is available and so forth.

Saw that plasma at the store, too. I got 3 of the laptops (me, my GF and her mom, LOL), 2 of which are for giveaways.

Anyway, that plasma was JUNK, and as soon as they brought them out I spotted the spec that made almost everyone who came in for one forget it: Resolution: 852x480. It's an *EDTV*, not an HDTV. A complete rip-off at that price.

Ok then show me a plasma EDtv for less? Or a HD plasma for the same price?

So far, so good. I'm pleased with it.

I have digital cable, but not hi-def. With some of the standard channels, the monitor reveals limitations of the source material. But, the digital channels look good.

I thought I was having a problem with the sound, but decided it was either the source material or a set-up issue. I connected my amp by RCA audio output jacks on display and left the internal speakers on, which resulted in a distinct decrease in sound quality. But, the manual instructs in a note that the internal speakers should be turned off when external amps or speakers are connected. After I disconnected the external amp AND restarted the display, the sound quality returned to normal.

The sound quality is much better than my 15-year old RCA TV with stereo sound. I cranked the display's sound all the way to the top without particularly audible noise, and I use the volume control of the cable box or amp for fine adjustment. Ultimately, I do rely on the amp and external speakers for quality sound, but the Viore provides an adequate audio output with low noise for the amp.

Also, the display unit has a large selection of input and output options.

The price likely reflects the kind of prices we will begin to see more often in February or March of 2006. Again, I'm pleased with the purchase. Now, we'll just see how long it lasts and whether or how much it requires servicing along the way...

QFT. It's a *fantastic* price for a 42" plasma EDTV.
