Wake on LAN is so awesome!! need some help though - still

I just tried the wake on LAN feature on my computer. For those who don't know, WOL (wake on LAN) turns your computer on when the NIC recieves a specific signal. It's great for me because I don't leave my computer on all day, so if I need remote access, then I can just use WOL.

link with more info

i don't understand why you are bumping this thread just to tell us this is awesome.
I find that funny actually. 🙂

I've got wake on LAN, too, but I don't know how to use it.

ROFL I was about to say the same thing, I mean it's great and all that you find WOL usefull but, how's your social life doing? (j/k)
I guess it really is the small things in life that bring people the most joy 🙂

well this post is pretty much equivalent to many of the hardware related posts in the other forums lol... "I just got hardware A and it rocks"...stuff to that effect 😉

Hey after topics like "How do you wipe?" or " Shouldn't we let poor school aged children starve to
death " this thread is a breath of fresh air. It's always nice to find a new, useful feature about your
computer, I can totally relate and appreciate your pleasure.

I should have WOL :|. When I bought my NIC, I specifically bought the model w/ WOL, but I noticed several months later that they did not give me WOL.

<< peto

does your mb support it?? just cause ur nic does, doesn't mean that your mb does.
>>

exactly, check in your BIOS too.
(i wanna turn on my neighbors computer, not with this damned MAC address 🙁 I want just IP 😀)
also, I tried the arp command, with no luck....anyone know the syntax of this command?
such as to find the MAC addy of 192.168.1.10 🙂 --yes, on a LAN.

Funny, I had to disable the WOL on my NIC. It kept restarting my computer whenever it received any signal AT ALL, not just the WOL signal. Believe me, having your computer spontaniously start on it's own at 3 AM is creepy! 🙁

Yeah, god forbid we have a technical discussion in a technical forum, and yes I do agree it's ok in OT, so there! 😛
I'll bump it every 5 minutes if it keeps the Abortion and Religious threads at the bottom!

I love WOL, I've got the Intel Desk/LAN Manger software that came with my Nics, it rocks! Can wake, shut down, sleep, etc.... I can also boot from LAN and have a bootable CD and do a total remote install very easily! Cool! I know to all u network gurus it's old news, and you do it every day! 😛

TTT 😀

Yeah, it is a pleasant departure from the "mandatory forced welfare contributions are good because I feel guilty about never giving to charity" threads.

i read some of the website and i'm wondering, what can i do with this? it's benefits are obvious for an IT department, but what purpose does it serve for maintaining your own computer? anyone have a story of something they used it for at home that was actually useful? thanks!

Try this (assuming you are on a windows machine, and your neighbors computer is on at the moment...): nbtstat -A 192.168.1.10
Notice that it is a capital -A...

You'll get the MAC and a few other items.

You can also ping the machine, then do: arp -a

Well a way that I might use it would be if I'm at school and for some reason I need a file from my computer, I can use WOL to start my computer. I have an FTP server that runs at startup, so once I turn the computer on with WOL, I can download the file from my HDD.

LOL maybe someone was trying to get into your computer.
