Wake on Lan, anybody using it have comments?

I am thinking about low power options, like suspend to ram with a wake on lan, but the "magic" packet stuff has me confused. What exactly goes on, how practical is it to use on like a lightly used 24/7 server?

It is confusing because you confuse two issues that are hardly related.

Wake On LAN (WOL) is a method to Start On a computer that is totally Off through the Network.

What you are talking about is Computer that is always On and you would like to "Kick" it into Standby when not in use. Depending on the settings Standby reduces power consumption by switching off the Hard Drive, blanking the monitor reduce CPU cycle etc.

Standby mode settings are a combination of checking the computer?s Mobo BIOS to determine the activities that would "Kick" the computer out of Standby, and Windows Power Configuration (in the Control Panel).

Magic packet has Nothing to do with Standby.

Wake On LAN (WOL) - Start a Network Computer Remotely from your Network or the Internet.
