Waiting for the next 360

Getting ready to purchase an xbox but have read threads that mention the "Falcon" from Microsoft will be the next improvement from Microsoft. Is this something that will happen before Xmas and is it worth the wait. From what I know, it will have a different board and if I remember it will also have a smaller (65) instead of 90 core. Correct me if I am wrong in any of this...this will be our first purchase for a gaming machine and hopefully will have enough information to make the best choice.

thanks

From what I've read on some forums some of the new Halo Edition systems may have the new Falcon board. I would look for Pro,Elite, ect to have them late Nov/early Dec when the holidays start pushing old stock out. MS will want to push old out before they bring the new. Halo 3,Mass Effect, ect should really move the old stock out.

I would have done bought a 360 months ago but am waiting on the Falcon myself. I ain't gonna buy something thats guaranteed to die at some point.

failure rate pre-Zephyr was 30%. with zephyr...well, no one knows...i'd like to think the elite failures (zephyr mobos) were just defective consoles. if you really want a 65nm box, wait for at least lot 735, and its still speculation that 734 on is really 65nm. 734 brings a new brick, a new cpu heatsink, and a power connector that doesn't lock into the console. that said, you really may as well just buy one now and be happy. though i'm pretty sure its as much as confirmed that the premium will come bundled with forza 2 by mid oct.

No, it's not guaranteed to die. It's just tons of misinformation.

I might have got carried away with the guaranteed to die statement. How hot the room stays the 360 is in,if its cleaned regularly, not inside a closed space will all effect how long one lasts. It could last a month it can last many years. But consider yourself lucky if it lasts the 4-6 year lifespan. Anyone that buys at this point IMO are crazy with the new rev coming so soon. But then again if everyone decided to wait for it then it will be slower getting into stores.

So yeah buy now and enjoy 😀.

Xbox 360 Fanboy has a bunch of links to information stating that Falcon chips are beginning to make their way into retail.

Tech nuts the world over have been waiting for the new 65nm Xbox 360 "Falcon" CPUs for a while and word on the street is that they're finally being rolled out to retail.

According to various reports and photo evidence over on the Xbox.com forums, new Halo 3 Xbox 360 consoles with lot numbers #734 have been confirmed to have the newly new 65nm CPUs in them. So, if the Halo 3 360s are a predictor of things to come, hopefully we'll be seeing 65nm technology in all Xbox 360s hitting store shelves soon. Lots more information and a guide to tell if your Xbox 360 has Falcon technology can be read over on the Xbox.com forums via the links below. You're free now ... fly Falcon, fly!

Falcon discovery thread.

One of my friend's 360s bit the dust with the RROD, of course he also piled unclean / old clothing and various other pieces of crap on top of it, beside it, and under it due to his living quarters being the equivalent of a third world country. I immediately shower and soak the bottom of my shoes in rubbing alcohol every time I return from his residence.

4-6 year lifespan is pathetic anyway. My NES/SNES systems still work just fine.

yep no moving parts which means at most you might have to clean the cartridge/system ports from time to time.

On that site xbox360fanboy they had a guide telling you whether or not it is a 65nm core. And they said if it has a aluminum hsf it is a 65nm. Why would Microsoft use aluminum? Copper is better in hsfs.... none of the good hsfs these days use all aluminum. This could be a reason why they may over heat in the future.

> Why would Microsoft use aluminum? Copper is better in hsfs

Because those great copper HSFs are $30-60 instead of $5.

In PCs the $50 HSF is usually only needed for overclocking or running near-silent, not for everyday use at stock speed. It would be nice to have a quiet 360, but most people would not pay an extra $100 for it. Just ask Sony.

The new 360 apparently draws 40-50 less watts so the CPU must be generating a lot less heat.

I'm well aware of that - 4-6 years is still a poor lifetime, which was my point really 😛

I would totally wait for the GPU shrink to 65nm, but I believe the earliest that could come is Feb. or something. I only have time to play video games Dec-Jan and May-Aug because of school. That being said, I'm gonna shoot for a lot 750 Elite. I hope Elites have the Falcon by then, or else I'm gonna get a PS3 and miss out on Mass Effect and Halo 3 (although I'm a big Ratchet and Clank fan).

When do you think Elites will get a 65nm CPU?

Its not misinformation, its consoles dying at an alarming rate. There is no denying this FACT. Sure its not a guarantee, but there is a good chance it will happen.

Yeah I wish I could wait but I'm tired of waiting 😀. I wanted a 360 months ago but have been waiting on the Falcon which the wait is almost over(don't want Halo Edition). I am buying the first week of Dec so I am hoping Falcons are common and can be found since its the holidays. But I think the 65nm CPU will help keep temps down alone to nearly cut out the chances of RROD. I want GoW, Halo 3, Mass Effect, ect. That and I will have a HDTV around the same time
so I really need something to put it to use.

I would expect the Elites will get the Falcon boards around the same time as the others. But I guess it all depends on which version sells the most and clears out old stock. My guess would be sometime in Nov/Dec.
