waiting for the 1GB GTS

Should I just wait for the 1GB gts and skip the GT altogether?

the GT is so overpriced right now.
the 3870 is 20$ less then the GT on preorder RIGHT NOW and performs 17-40% worse (with 30+% worse on highest res like 1920x1200 and another 10% loss when you enable AA).

I think the 1GB GTS might outperform the ultra on really high resolutions (which is what I need)... do you think it will? or will I have to wait another 6+ monthes until the geforce 9 arrives?

it won't have problems with not enough video memory but it's still on a 256-bit but rather than the 384-bit bus the GTX/Ultra has. i don't know.

so you are saying the GTX outperforms the GT probably because it has a wider ram bus.. not so much the extra ram? And that the 1GB might not outperform the ultra? this is bleak.

actually, the GTS should outperform the Ultra because it has higher clocks and shader clocks and the same number of stream processors. i'm waiting for the 512MB 128SP GTS.

but only marginally outperform it though... I was really hoping for a big jump... like it was from the 7950 to the 8800...

I think the new GTS is to supercede the current GTX, then next yr Q1 the new GTX will be out with the performance jump you want....

can't they just release the GF9 already.... bah! it wouldn't surprise me if they make a new 8800GTX card with better performance but the same name... if they do that I am buying AMD for my next card on principle...

For modern gaming at what resolution do you need more than 512mb? I'll probably stick with 1680x1050 for a year or so...

We don't know how it will perform yet. There havn't been any real benches... But yeah it should be faster than the GTX atleast.

1920x1200 The native res on my 700$ dell ultrasharp 24inch.

I am also planning on getting a 1080p projector and plug my computer to it with a wireless mouse and keyboard for truly spectacular gaming.

Flattery will get you everywhere! ;p

oh, and did i mention it costs 1/3 the price of a large TV while being 3x the viewable screen size? 🙂

I hope that Dec 3rd date is realistic, and I hope it's a hard launch. I'm prepared to spend $400 or so if it performs at Ultra levels.

oooh... they set it to dec 3rd? awesome... i thought I would have to wait longer!

I better be up at 6am then to read the first reviews and nab one while supplies last... Heh... I might end up selling it on ebay a week later for 100$ profit (considering I just saw someone selling two GT cards from some no name brand for 650$ with 1 day to go and 30 bids...)

yeah, i'm doing the eVGA stepup from my 8600GT to the 128SP 512MB 8800GTS.

however, I believe only the 512MB version is coming out on December 3rd. I think the 1GB is coming out at a later date.

I wouldn't bother doing the 1GB GTS for 1920, Taltamir. I doubt that many games are taking you much above 512 at that resolution(Crysis might be over a bit). The lack of mem bandwidth is probably hurting you(and me for that matter) with AA applied a lot more.

aka1nas:
512MB vram is hurting already 8800 GT (not mem bandwith) (in tests this is seen as 8800 GTS 320MB and 8800 GT both tanks when 8800 GTS 640MB fares little bit better)

Where did you get those figures?

Anandtech's figures, are it's 85.8% of the GT's performance at 1920 x 1200. The higher the resolution the closer the 3870 gets to the 8800 GT's performance.

I am sorry, i meant to say the GT performs 17-40% BETTER...

It is the magic of percentages...

Example: on anands test 3870 scored 30fps on a certain game (the most significant difference, I just picked it because it is easier to do the math for, not because it is indicative) and the GT scored 40fps on the same one.
According to this you could say that the 3870 is 25% slower then the GT
Or you could say that the GT is 33.3% faster then the 3870.
Both are correct because percentages depend on which is compared first.

The tests I saw when I wrote that statements only tested 3 games... which happened to fall in the 30+% difference.
Possibly on purpose.

According to the average of anand's tests the 3870 is 15 slower... which makes the GT 18% faster.
