Waiting for Longhorn before buying a new notebook

Hi guys,

I have been looking into options to buy a new notebook, and I have been posting in some forums.

But one reply hit me and made me wonder. Someone said:

I'm going to buy a new notebook six months after Microsoft releases Windows Longhorn. By then the major threats and third party driver and software updates will be addressed. Plus the hardware designed to support Longhorn will have migrated down from the desktop platform to the notebook platform.

What do you guys think about that?

and I would also have this other questions:

- Once MS releases longhorn, will manufacturers start offering notebooks with Longhorn installed right away?
- Will Longhorn support current programs designed for XP?

I would like to know your thoughts.
Thanks a lot

I would agree with the fact that you don't want to base your laptop purchase around a Launch of an OS. You will prob find companys that are going to offer LongHorn on lappys as soon as they can. But i would have to say go out get a top of the line you can aford right now and enjoy it....

Sure, I could wait for Turion ... and then for it to get cheap ... etc, etc ...

Get the idea? ;)

I think it's supposed to come next year. But then again XP x64 was supposed to be done already.

Or better yet, get a powerbook with Tiger and you already have a better operating system than what longhorn seems to be shaping up to be :)

Hello

WinXP Pro x64 extended is in its Release Candidate 2. I heard that it will be released in a couple of months. I am running it and it still needs better drivers. No 64-bit driver for the Mobility Radeon 9600...I am using the desktop drivers from ati on my m6809.

Anyways, I am a bit suspicious about Longhorn and its naming. First, WindowsXP was codenamed Whistler, a mountain in British Columbia. One of the upcoming release is codenamed Blackcomb, a mountain beside Whistler. Longhorn, however, is just a place between Blackcomb and Whistler, a "watering hole", so to speak. Longhorn isn't the major release after WindowsXP? Maybe Longhorn is just upgrades and similar to WinME? I still use WinME on a desktop machine, by the way. I don't know... hehe just commenting.

I think WinXP still has a lot of mileage left.

ATI never releases drivers for Mobility chips, you either have to use whatever the OEM provides or use modded drivers.

but I haven't tried the DNA drivers yet.
I don't think Omega has 64bit modded yet? Correct me if I'm wrong.

No idea, I haven't bothered installing x64 on my M6805 since the first beta\alpha when I couldn't get wireless drivers, and now I have an Athlon 64 desktop to play with x64.

The wireless is fine with the m6809. Your m6805 should run too. The Broadcom drivers came with x64.
