Waiting and waiting....

Having been looking forward to fragging my way through Doom 3 and HL2 I have held off my graphics card upgrade.
At the moment I am happily running my Geforce 4 4400 and am happy as anything.

However that upgrading bug has started work on my insides and it is getting harder not to buy a new card, I know I want to but should I?

As one can probably gather I am suffering from a lack of justification to upgrade because there are no real dx9 titles out there.

:evil:So in a true British style, here is a kick in the balls to all those who are developing the above games and especially to nvidia for fooling a mate into buying an fx 5900ultra.

I am suffering from the same ailment. I am thinking very seriously about getting an ATI 9800 np in anticipation of the DX9 titles coming out. I know that the practical thing to do is wait and see, but if I ordered the card today, it would be here in less than a week.

As you said, the practical thing to do is wait. If you don't it appears as though the ATI cards are going to do HL2 best and Nvidia cards will do Doom3 best. Since HL2 is scheduled for release in the next couple of months (is there a release date?) and Doom3 is "1st quarter 2004" (according to my local EB Games) I'd go with a 9800.

I was running a Geforce 2 GTS 32meg up until last week, holding out for HL2. The prices on 9800non-pros dropped here in Canada so I picked one up locally for $370 (including a 7 day cash refund and 1 year instore warranty which is great). Excellent value for the money, it overclocks to basically pro speeds (the core goes farther than a pro, up to about 415MHz but the memory will only reach 333, a pro is 340). Judging from Gamersdepot.com and Anandtech.com benchmarks, my system should be getting 70+fps in HL2 benchmarks at 1024x768 max detail.

Been enjoying Wolf: ET and UT2003 in max detail with AA/AF as well 🙂 Zero driver problems.
