Oh wow. Totally unfair.

You mean I can't run around posting whatever I like, being an utter ass and a douche, then go back to remove all the evidence?

Oh gosh. What SHALL you do now?

Step 1: Don't post personally identifying on the internet.
Step 2: Don't act like an ass on the internet.
Step 3: Don't worry about what you've posted because you're not an ass.
Step 4: Profit!

Seriously, how much time do you think we have on our hands?

We only look at those that are brought to our attention When you guys complain to us, we look into it. We don't go around looking for trouble.

Most of the time you guys get ratted out by your fellow members for not following the rules.

That's why I asked. I had always assumed that most of the mods were retired, unemployed, or students. Even without "looking for trouble" it must take up a great deal of time to be a mod.
Actually reading through everything posted here would be a full time job. Add the drama involved whenever there is an issue and becomes a career in anxiety and depression. Doing it for free moves the whole thing into drinking Draino territory.

Interesting thread though, thanks for taking the time to clarify the rules.

 If it ever gets to me that much it's time from me to bail.

It does take time and we mods put in as much time as our lives allow. Which is why you may see some mods more frequently than others. We all have lives to live.

Reality of moderation is, we do it because we care for this place, and hoping to not sound glib, we are glad anytime we can help members out.

Can we still request that threads be deleted? I don't understand what the big issue is if we can just ask for the thread to disappear. Some posters here used to do that on a daily basis it seemed, often several times per day. I've done it once myself ages ago.

You can request it but you need to have good reason. Something on the line of personal information that can be traced to you or others. (which shouldn't be out there anyway).
Or maybe writing about an ex when you shouldn't have. Something like this.

It has never been the policy of this forum to delete threads. I would be curious to see what posters were doing this on a daily basis, because that never been my experience here as long as I've been a mod.

Most of the time a mod, if he/she agrees that the request has merit, may just remove the offending/revealing posts and not the thread. Removing a whole thread is a rare occurrence.

That thought occurred to me, but I thought it best not to suggest that you were all barking mad.
Some of them (not e) think that being a Mod or Admin is prestigious. That's why they keep the title but seldom, if ever, do anything with it.

The sensible ones, who are looking at the draino can and thinking about it, just quit.

Am I to understand that the mods read every post that's been edited in every thread and compare them to the original to assure continuity in the thread? Or is it a pick and choose kind of thing where certain threads are audited and others ignored?

Edit one of your own posts. Save the edit. There's a new link at the bottom edge of your post, last edited by Greenman at <time>. Click on that, click on compare versions. Mods can see those edit changes for anyone, we can only see them for ourselves.

The pay here is GREAT too! :hmm:

We are volunteers, and yes, this place can take up WAY too much time.

Everyone should always assume that there is a copy of what they post somewhere, so that way you moderate yourself from posting something that shouldn't have been posted in the first place.

It's understandable that you accidentally mispost one thing, but a whole thread? At that point, just resign yourself to the fact that what you wrote is out there for the world (or at least AnandTech) to see.

If you are going to do this, Wait until the thread is forgotten about, then go back and edit... no one will notice

I'm pretty sure there was a period not so long ago where 2/3 of Heller's topics turned into "delete me" after an hour or so. Most of them were deleted.

I did not realize PFI threads could have this kind of entertainment. Wonderful.

Everyone threadcrapping here is getting an infraction. This in a forum for respectfully inquiring about forum issues, not the kiddie toilet of OT.
