Wait or Just Buy One Now?

I'm building a new system and am wondering about the video card. I want to play Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 so I will need a vid card capable of playing those games, nicely. I have an AMD XP 2500+ btw.

Should I get a cheap card to hold me over or just spend the money and get one now? Price is an important factor, I'm not paying a ton for (nor do I want) the best video card on the market.

I'm leaning towards waiting. Right now I have a GF4 MX440 SE vid card for $46 as a hold-over card.

I disagree.
There will ALWAYS be more cards coming, and the current ones will be cheaper.
Gaming on a GF4 MX is a pretty sad experience, I had one on my 3 year olds pc and it wasn't even good enough for that IMO, so I upgraded him to a Ti4200.
Buy a R9800pro for $350, or a GF FX 5900 regular for $350 if you prefer nVidia, and you will be fine for any games coming out soon, and have the enjoyment of really gaming for the months you would have waited.
Look at R9700Pros. The cheapest OEM on Pricewatch is $285, which is probably less than $100 less than they were a year ago when they came out. Woohoo! A guy who would've waited a year could have saved a whole $100!
I seriously doubt the two cards I listed above will be much below $300 by the end of the year, so you're waiting to save $50? Not worth it to me.

Agree, wait! What you have will get you by. In the mean time, prices will continue to drop. It is always better to wait if you don't need it now.

BTW- the only card I know of that's supposed to be out by September is the R360, and you already said you don't want top of the line.
The nV40 and R4x0 cards arent due till Christmas or early next year, their arrival is the only thing that will push current prices down much. (and like I said R9700 Pro prices didn't really drop when the R9800 came out by that much)
