Wait or buy now?

Figured since this is a CPU/Mobo question I'd post here instead of in the CPU or Mobo forum.

So, I am looking for a new CPU and Mobo to go with. Questions are: Is now a good time ta buy or should I wait and what chip and board should I go with?

My info:

-I am NOT going to OC anything
-This is for a gaming machine (it will be used for very little else)
-If I gotta sacrifice a little performance for stability, so be it.
-I don't mind spending a bit but not looking for anything "extreme"
-Current Specs:

Power Supply - 1050Watt Enermax Revolution 85+
CPU - Core 2 Duo E8400
Mobo - EVGA nForce 780i SLi
Mem - 4GB GSkill DDR2-1066
Video - BFG 285 GTX OC2 x2 SLi
Sound - SB X-Fi Gamer
HDD - 500GB Seagate SATA PerpRec
Ethernet - Onboard Gigabit
DVDRW - Lite-On
BluRay - Lite-On

I would wait if I were you.
That machine is still very capable, and buying a new mobo/CPU combo may require new RAM as well, so I would just wait...

Guess I should clarify a bit. Based on whats out now, and whats coming....should I buy now or wait a bit? I am buying a new CPU/Mobo (memory as well). Just not sure if anything really exciting is right around the corner or not.

Well, I just ordered a new system and from what I saw, nothing really groundbreaking is around the corner. There's always new stuff coming, but nothing truly groundbreaking that you will need to wait for, so as far as I know, now is as good of a time as any to order something.

What kinda budget do you have?

If ur curious, I just ordered a $950 Phenom II system, so here is what I got,

"Mobo:
1 x (10010088) GIGABYTE GA-MA790XT-UD4P AMD 790X AM3 Phenom II Socket AM3 5200 MT/s PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) ATX Motherboard Retail @ $109.99

GPU:
1 x (10010262) XFX HD-489A-ZDFC Radeon HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express x16 (2.0v) Video Card Retail @ $197.99

RAM:
1 x (10009555) CORSAIR TW3X4G1333C9 4GB PC3-10666 (DDR3-1333) DDR3 Memory Retail @ $82.99

HDD:
1 x (10010076) WESTERN DIGITAL RE3 WD3202ABYS 320GB SATA II 7200 RPM 16MB Buffer Hard Drive Bulk @ $70.99

CPU:
1 x (10010385) AMD HDZ955FBGIBOX Phenom II x4, Black Edition 3.2Ghz,8MB Cache,125W,45nm 3.20 GHz AM3 4 x 512KB Desktop Processor Retail @ $245.00

PSU:
1 x (10007112) CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX TX 750W Power Supply Retail @ $109.99

CASE:
1 x (10008513) THERMALTAKE VH8000BWS Armor+ MX Aluminum Mid Tower Case Black Retail @ $128.99 "

I am not a huge computer expert or anything, but I spent about a month doing research...

You are in the same boat I am. We have very similar systems. For me, the choice of whether to buy now or to wait comes down to whether I want an X58 or a P55. I'm hoping lynnfield reviews will start to trickle over the next couple weeks to help me make my decision (most major sites have gotten their first motherboards recently.)

In short though, from what I understand:
-If you plan on going with SLI and can afford it - you are better off getting an X58 which is available now and therefore there's no point in waiting (you will be paying a premium)
-If you plan on going with a single card and/or want to save a couple hundred $$ (I'm guessing) a P55 might be a better value (you'll likely get better value, but need to wait until ~September)

Hope that helps.

Well, as far as spending goes, I am NOT wanting to drop 700 bux on a CPU. I am however willing to go 700 or 800 or whatever on CPu, Mobo and Memory. I think I see an i7 920 in my future if thats a nice way to go. Memory....a nice 12gb kit from GSkill perhaps. But I am stumped on what mobo. I see EVGA has several boards out there buuuut...what do I get? SLi for sure but again, no OCing in my future that I can think of. Stability is what I am after but of course with two 285s I do like my settings near the max.

In that case I'd say buy if you can find what you want in your price range. you are clearly on the high-end of things, and there's nothing new coming out that will change what you'd get.

For what its worth, I currently have 8GB of RAM and even though its stupid cheap, I wouldn't spend an extra $10 for it. Completely worthless. If you end up going X58, get 3x2gb.

Wellll......two reasons for getting 6x2Gb. 1- Well, sure its nice to say u have it. 2- I have 12 other machines...chances are I'll have another X58 machine by years end and then i wouldnt need to buy memory just take 6gigs from one and slide to another.

Just wait on the extra 6 gb's, because you know that the price will continue to drop. Than you can buy your 6 gb's for your new system at a reduced price from today. Maybe even have faster RAM too!! I don't know for sure, but filling up all 6 slots you might lose Triple Channel option.
