Correct.

The first and only dual-core extreme processor with the Core series architecture was the 65nm X6800 (conroe) released before the Kentsfield first quads were released in Nov 2006.

Since then only quads have been the extreme edition processor, both 65nm and 45nm.
 
you don't really need an unlocked multi since the duals do 500mhz fsb
that equals this potential:

e8400 = 4.5ghz
e8500 = 4.75ghz
e8600 = 5.00ghz

If you can go any higher than that, then you probably have other techniques that won't become multiplier limited. But for all other basic overclocking purposes, 9x, 9.5x, and 10x multipliers are more than enough to get a ~ 4ghz overclock.

The e5xxx and e7xxx have even higher multies

 
Like jaredpace said, you dont really need one with the E8600 around. 10X multi is all you will ever want/need.
 
Yeah, the 10x multi was why I spent the extra and got the E8600. Since the wolfdales appear to be Intel's last 'mainstream' dual-core part I would guess that's why they didn't do an "extreme" version. Of course, I know nothing directly, just speculating.
