Wait for RTX 2060 or get used GTX 1070?

So im looking to finally upgrade from my trusty gtx 970. I game @ 1440p and i mostly play strategy games (Total war especially), so i dont need the latest and greatest. I do plan on upgrading my monitor to a 144hz monitor @ 1440p, right now i have 60hz.

I cant spend more than $300-$350 on a card, so these used gtx 1070s going for $250-300 are looking mighty sweet! But should i wait for the RTX 2060? Gtx 1060 matched the previous gen gtx 970 in specs, the RTX 2060 should do the same ya? What's your 2 cents?

I wonder if the 2060 will match a gtx 1070 in performance and which card is better future proofed. I am assuming the 2060 wont have ray tracing or is otherwise subpar at RTX.

Ya Ray tracing isn't that important for me. I'm old enough to know that new graphics features take years to implement and don't become standard until consoles get them.

At this point we dont even know if the 2060 will be a rebadged 1070 lol so a little early to be thinking of this IMO.

I ended up going for a Gigabyte 1080 Xtreme off Ebay for $350, upgrading from my 970 just after RTX was released and everything was basically confirmed. I wouldn't go for a 1070, try to get a 1080.

I don’t know what your stance on buying a used mining card is, but a lot of 1070s were used for mining so keep that in mind.

For your use case a 1070 should be fine, and a 1080 a bit better. Also, it is less likely that a used 1080 was mined on.

IMO used mining cards should be fine if they use quality fans and were used in climate controlled environments (not some dudes garage). This line of discussion is polarized however, so my best advice would be to do your own research.

The total war games are extremely demanding so the premise is not right. My 1080 Ti struggles to put out any more than 60fps at 1440p Ultra in Total War Warhammer II. I also run a 144hz 1440p and I never get more than 70ish at the overworld screen on ultra, dropping into the 40's or 50's in big battles
