I was just about to build a new pc, but should I wait for the quad core price drop? I was going to get an E6420 soon. Thanks.

The q6600 price drop is not guaranteed, and venders could raise prices significantly if demand is greater than supply. But I think it's worth the wait if you have a working pc right now.

Yeah I just put a new AM2 Opteron system together like 3 months ago...I'll probably be upgrading to Intel come July 22 or whatever it is. Just can't help it when I feel the itch!

don't feel bad, I JUST NOW got my stupid opteron 180 upgrade working and I"m planning to get a Q6600 as soon as I can get the G0 stepping. An opteron 180 as a file server isn't overkill, right? right?

Speaking as a q6600 owner I can say that unless you're running truly multithreaded software, don't waste your money on a quad. At this point in time, very few titles will actually use all 4 cores. The only app I regularly use that actually exploits the full power of the chip is x264.exe Other may say "be future proofed" which I don't agree with either. In 2 years, I'm sure you will be able to buy a quad or octa chip for the same price that will out-preform the current generation of quads. That said, if you do a lot of video editing and x264 encoding, you'll really enjoy a q6600.

Just my 2 cents.

Everybody just wants a quad because it's cool. It's like owning a Hemi. Screw it if apps can't truely take advantage of it yet.
