According to Anand's Asus P5WDG2-WS review, the Presler is supposed to OC very well & with 4MB L2, it should ffer very good performance, though not sure how good compared to an X2? I'm trying to decide if I shoul wait for Presler in early '06 or build an Athlon X2 system now. Hopefully, the 65nm Presler will also reduce heat output/power consumption.

Any ideas?

You go ahead and wait.... I've have my X2's for months and been enjoying them, and I bet they will still be in the pressler ballpark or better when they come out, but even if they aren't I've had months of fun.

pressler will come out with 3.46 955ee, amd will come out with fx60, evens out in the end. im pretty sure the 940 will still not be able to catch up with 4400 even with more cache, the 950 wil probably be pretty close to 4800, same as 940 pretty close to 4400. 5000 will be the leaderof the regular chips when it comes out, but probably later than fx60/pressler cause otherwise it would steal alot of sales from the fx when the 4800 will be enough to handle the 950.

It better be able to clock 4400Mhz or more before it can compete with likes of a 2600Mhz X2. It'll still be a hot MOFO at those speeds. Personally I'd pass intel's netburst reactors until they give us somethiong responsible and refined like conroe.. why reward them for drawing this crap out? waiting never hurts anyone.

a dual core X2/pressler overclockers shootout should be fun though.

If you think that will be "even" you're horribly misinformed. Intel better hope a 3800 is'nt in the review with thier top chip because a 3800 beats 840EE right now most of the time let aone you add 600Mhz per core and cache like FX60 will have.

Pressler is supposedly going to show up "Q106" which could be jan 1st or march 30th or something. Plus its like zebo said, x2s are about 1.60:1 or more with netburst dualies right now, so unless you're getting 4.2GHz or more out of it, then you're looking at a 2.6GHz x2 still beating it.

And by then, what do you think AMD will be doing ? Wait 3 months for something the same or less than what you can get today ? and for more money I bet ?

There's nothing wrong with waiting. Isn't that right Mark. Besides, Presler is not going to be the "star" come early '06. I am very anxious to see Yonah, and which companies will offer desktop boards/adapters for it if needed.

Seriously guys you could'nt give me a Netburst chip for free so I may be bias but Yonah is another ball of wax altogether. You get A64 performance for lower power which is what i like AMD chips for in the first place mostly. If they clock like 2.7-2.8 like X2's and are priced right that will prolly be my next CPU. I want an intel chipset and board again and it's always fun to play with something new.. DDR2 also.

Don't even think about a Presler. You'd be better off with a Yonah in your desktop, honestly.

Yonah will kill Presler, and that's sad.

Yeah, kind of. Presler is just a "filler" I suppose. I don't think they changed anything from Prescott to Presler except a die shrink. And a few added features that hardly anyone will use. Vanderpool? LaGrande? Yippee... Still the same crappy FPU. The only benefit will be higher clocks, lower voltage and lower temps, which were the huge gripes. So, they of course will perform better/cooler and not have the throttling problem (at least I hope not).
I'm with Zebo on the Yonah thing like I mentioned in my last post. If they have a desktop board/adapter for it, I'm pretty much already sold on it. That will be my next upgrade (benchmarks viewed first of course).
