wait for nforce vs AMD 760 now

In light of the new information about the nforce coming out soon, what would you guys recommend? If it is true then I may survive on th gf2mx integrated chipset till the gforce 3 price comes down. What would you guys recommend? Wait a month or buy now?

definitely wait for nforce. I am in the same boat and also waiting for nforce. You will also have no Via in an nforce soln (hurray!), integrated drivers (even with a GF3 u won't need an extra driver), less conflicts b/c sound is built-in, and of course that awesome double memory bus, etc. nforce is worth waiting for IMO

I think nForce is a very attractive solution and if you can wait until the end of the quarter, I think it will be worth it.

Yes, it will have an AGP slot. NVidia and all the motherboard makers have made that clear.

nforce is for budget systems so that they can actually have decent audio and video integrated. If you are a performance user, there is no reason to shell out like 250 bux (or whatever it will cost) for a Mobo that you are just going to disable half the features on. Think the nvidia chipset will have less glitches than VIA's?!? Remember the Riva 128? No one ever gets it right the first time. And honestly, do you think nvidia put their best engineers on the Xbox project (worth BILLIONS of dollars) or a chipset that maybe 10% of AMD users (less than 20% of the market already) will buy? I think the AMD 761 will still be the best performance chipset out there, until nvidia works the kinks out.

The only thing that I would disable would be the graphics, and that's not even at first since I don't have a graphics card. 1 item disabled = 1/2 of all the things that come w/ the mobo? I don't think so. If Nvidia gets it right, and has a good driver flow for win2k, and can try to get it under the $250 range, I think we might just have a top performer...perhaps even outdoing the sis735 chipset

thephew- nForce will retail @ about $120-150 so its also priced accordingly... The Audio will be better than most out there and so will the video, and it also has an AGP slot for future upgradibility (geforce 3/4/5...). Also, it does have some performance enhancements that I like (ie. HyT).

Anyway, its a personal call, good luck.

Hold on, where did the nForce technology come from again? Oh yeah, Xbox. Must be pretty stable because Microsoft wouldn't stand for there to be problems on their new console... I'm thinking that the nForce is essentially going to be ready to rock the moment it hits shelves. For the first time we have a chipset that is potentially marketable to everyone on the planet and is coming out with more forethought than ever before (see VIAs and ALis DDR solutions to date) and you don't want anything to do with it? More for the rest of us I guess.

<< Microsoft wouldn't stand for there to be problems on their new console... >>

Yea like they don't stand for problems in their software either!

<< Yea like they don't stand for problems in their software either! >>

Well said, but usually consoles are very reliable (read few problems) and if Microsoft wants to really make a go of this, and I think they do, they know they have to be very reliable too.

<< Why are people going nuts over this nVidia chipset?

And what the hell is wrong with AMD761 based mobos hmmm?
>>

Nothings wrong w/ amd761 boards, it's just that with some preliminary tests people have seen that the nforce just brings more to the table. Eventually you will be able to choose between nforce, sis735, amd761 (Maybe even a 76#), and Via chipsets for your motherboard. Nvidia's board looks like it performs very well against it's competiters. I don't see how you can't be excited about nforce, especially if you're planning a new rig come this september. If nforce lives up to it's expectations, man oh man this is gonna be one great fall. Yup, more for us.

I will be surprised if it is really less than $150. The cheapest 761 mobos are like 130, add in high demand, and all that integrated stuff, and its gotta retail pretty high to start with. nvidia has too much on their plate this summer, between xbox, gf3, and nforce. Thats why my gf3 is backordered until like august (dell deal). Demand will vastly exceed supply for months, so don't expect low prices at release. Now, if they would sell a version without audio/video, I'd be interested. Every integrated device I have owned has had one of its components fail (tv/vcr, tv tuner/radio, washer/dryer), making me replace the whole thing just to fix one part. I can't even imagine what an iMac owner must do if the screen fails. Anyhow, just my opinion. Nvidia is a great company, they just take a few efforts until they get it right; the TNT 2 Ultra was their first video card that lived up to what it should have been, and I bet the nforce will go through the same growing pains.

Wait if you can, Nothing is wrong about 761/VIA 686b (I think it is the best chipset for athlon now with the SB Live issue gone). nForce is just gonna kick! The sound may even be better than SB Live! and you can still use GeForce3. And yes I agree, Microsoft is putting WAY too much money into XBox to have it turn bad because of nvidia crap. nForce will be the most stable, highest performing, Most feature Rich chipset for the Athlon we have ever seen!

P.S. If you critics think that there's nothing to nForce other than the Dual DDR, Integrated Video/Sound then, you're NUTS! Read Anand's article on nForce.

I'm grappling with the same issue. However i've pretty much decided to just go with the Nforce because of the superior DDR support.

Time will reveal all!(prices, performance, yaddayadda ya)

The AMD 761 is a very good solution now. All the bugs are worked out and it is stable. I would imagine that the early Nforce chipset mobos will have some glitches/bugs, as most new chipsets do. Personally, I wouldn't be first in line to buy a just released Nforce based mobo, but 2-3 months after they are released should result in some real sweet mobos. Maybe.(see top 🙂 )

<< I will be surprised if it is really less than $150. >>

Manufacturers have already stated that the prices will be around or lower than $150.

<< nvidia has too much on their plate this summer, between xbox, gf3, and nforce. >>

Well considering the GF3 is out that isn't a project, and nForce is very closely related on both the xbox and regular motherboards. So they really only have one big project.

<< Thats why my gf3 is backordered until like august (dell deal). >>

That's Dell's problem, there are many places with GF3s in stock.

<< Demand will vastly exceed supply for months, so don't expect low prices at release. >>

If there are a bunch of smart-asses like you out there, I doubt that will happen.

<< Now, if they would sell a version without audio/video, I'd be interested. >>

just disable the onboard A/V and quit whining.

<< Nvidia is a great company, they just take a few efforts until they get it right; the TNT 2 Ultra was their first video card that lived up to what it should have been, and I bet the nforce will go through the same growing pains. >>

Nvidia has been working really hard on this chipset because MS wants the XBOX to be STABLE. There's a good chance that will translate to a very stable chipset for us AMD users.
