What should I do people? Any suggestions? I'm building a new computer, bought a third of the parts already. Just waiting for DDR to finally arrive. But at the current ram prices, should I just ditch DDR and stick with pc133?

They say DDR will only be 5% to 10% more, but more than what price? The dirt cheap prices now, or the more normal prices during the summer? In addition I heard the performance wasn't that much more. In terms of more bang for the buck, what do you guys think? Because at the current prices for pc133, I can probably load my system with 512mb. And I'm also talking about the faster version of DDR... the 266mhz?

Thanks in advance...

Not that I like to run a price page, but here is some information concerning DDR Ram pricing that came from a VERY good source. Dunno if this is wholesale or retail though...

If those are the true prices of DDR-RAM there is no way that I am switching to the 760 chipset. I am happy with $174 for 256MB of PC133 CAS2 Crucial RAM.

Fkloster, at least DDR is faster, I'd much rather pay $30 more than Rambus for DDR and see a performance boost, than pay $65 more than high quality PC133 for absolutely no diff in speed. Plus, price will probably be cheaper on places like pricewatch after its out for a week or two.

WTF ?? those prices can't be right.
What happened to DDR1600 near PC133, and DDR2100 5-10% above?

It's still no where near what Rambus cost when it first hit the market. DDR will also drop over time.

Still to answer the question, I have 128MB PC100 2-2-2 (no PC133 on my board) I intend to pick up another 256MB of 2-2-2 and roll with it. 384MB of 2-2-2 with superbypass, and I'm going to pick up a slotA TBird900 (because my overclocking was a dismal failure), toss a good video card in the mix (NV20 or Rampage) and that will be plenty fast for me. I'm not moving to AMD760 for a while yet.

Win2000 just wants lots of RAM, it doens't need to be super fast, just enough to keep it from swapping, and for games at 1024x768x32 and up they are mostly video card limited so DDR wont' be that big of a deal over SDR IMHO.

You won't be able to buy DDR stuff for a while now. Go for the SDRAM! It'll be good stuff for a good while.

I think, for the price difference you might pay (20-40), you can just buy the next faster CPU and make up for it. So all in all, you get the same system for the money.

Thanks for your suggestions. Picked up a 256 mb pc133 dimm from Accessmicro for less than $150 shipped. Just sitting on it now until December... can't wait for that magical day to get here...
