Wait, a PS4 slim?

I have a PS4 coming today, and just saw rumors about a PS4 slim coming with a 1TB hard drive and who knows what other improvements - should I wait and get that?

No. It'll be the same thing and you can replace the HDD on your own.

Rumors are just that, rumor. They said it was going to be announced at E3 and didn't happen now they change the story and the supposed leaked pictures keep changing and if you ask me the images I've seen make the PS4 look utterly cheap. Plastic pushbuttons replace the touch sensitive power and eject buttons. There are other rumors too about a version with a UHD Blu-Ray drive and 4k video capabilities from Netflix and Amazon video apps. I don't imagine there's much truth to that one as I expect UHD players to be pretty expensive to begin with when they launch next year. I doubt Sony wants to segment the PS4 market and also don't want to repeat the $600 PS3.

edit: There is already a newer model out there with 8% lower power consumption, is about 6db quieter, and weighs less. Apparently the buttons on the new one for power and eject are not digital any longer, but still retain their slim profile on the front of the casing. http://ps4daily.com/2015/08/ps4-cuh-1200/

These things usually get 1-2 hardware revisions to shrink in size. The PS3 (slim and super slim) and 360 (S and E) both did, at least. You're not going to get anything beyond maybe a quieter, cooler-running device that consumes less power. You can replace the HDD in the PS4 anyway. Unless you're more interested in saving a buck or two on electricity, to the extent you'd wait 6-12 months on a new model, I wouldn't worry about it.

Depends on your reasoning for getting a PS4 now. If you can hold off until next year, then wait, otherwise get it now and enjoy it.

Pointless. Also, it'll suck if Sony decides to make the PSU external to make it slimmer. It's better with it internal, less mess with cables and bricks. Got enough of those behind my media console. Also, as mentioned above, changing out the HDD on the PS4 is so easy and cheap.

Yeah, not worth it. AFAIK, the current PS4s aren't having any major issues so I'd keep the one you ordered. These redesigns usually happen to correct a flaw or to reduce manufacturing costs since inevitably, manufacturers have to cut the price of the console through the years to be competitive.

I'm waiting on the PS4 with 5GHz wifi before buying another.

As far as I know, the PS4s (and Xbox ones for that matter) don't have any major hardware issues. I don't see a reason to go with a new revision for only hard drive size considering how easy it is to change it yourself. The HDD is designed to be changed, you aren't cracking open anything you're not supposed to, so it's quite painless.

Just 'upgraded' from a launch PS4 to the current 12xx version. What a DIFFERENCE in fan speed. I cannot even tell when it is on sometimes and that's after hours of gaming. Well honestly, while gaming, the fan is audible when things are quiet, but it will throttle down significantly when you exit to the menu. Regardless, it's still quieter than the launch version. By the way the launch version is about the same volume as the 1st PS3 slim which was already quiet-ish, but over the years the standard for 'quiet' has gone up.

You'll be happy with a 12XX PS4 fan sound wise. I can't imagine how much more improvement Sony can get off a slim revision. They did allow developers access to the 7th core now, so we'll see if that ups heat. I doubt it'll do much. So if you are on the fence get a 12XX.

I bet your old one was just dusty inside. My launch one was loud until I cracked it open and blew out all the dust. Now, quiet.

How do you know if you get a new 12XX PS4? Are all the ones on sale now (Uncharted bundle) the new model?

Yes the uncharted bundle was the one I got and is the CUH-12XX. You'll see it printed on the box. If you buy at the store, obviously don't pay until you check for it. There are others, just check youtube or the google image search it. By the way the XX and letter is just SKUs for the country code and region. The 12 is the important one. The previous revision is 11 the launch is 10.

Yes, confirmed my Uncharted bundle has CUH-1215.
Thanks!

It'll probably be another year before Sony does that, what I'd like to see is 5GHz wifi support.

Interesting, I bought mine a year after launch and it's CUH-1001A. I don't get the spitting out discs issue the launch version had though nor the rubber tearing on the controller.

I never had those issues either but my friend's son is hard on his analog sticks and the rubber is starting to come off. It's because of how he plays nba2k16. He pulls back on the stick to shoot and slides his thumb off the back of the stick. The constant rubbing of his thumb against the corner of the stick has caused it to peel back. I told him he can just let it go you don't need to hold it with any force. He doesn't seem to get that and of course my friend refuses to spend $65 on a controller to replace one he wore out in a couple months. I don't blame him either to be honest. My controllers are near mint condition except for things like squeaks and in the trigger springs and the texture beginning to wear off the analog sticks (not peeling back).

Yeah the trigger squeak gets on my nerves occasionally.

Grip-itz or some of those cheap cap covers at Gamestop or Walmart takes care of wearing out rubbers, got Grip-itz on 2 of my controllers and one from EBgames on my third (and XB1 controllers too).

I've had to fix 5 controllers.

2 had broken triggers; replaced those for $2
1 had peeling rubber sticks, again $2
2 have torn conductive rubber grommets, maybe $1 to fix

I need to replace the battery on one. $5?

So, not the most reliable, but cheap and easy to fix.

I hear the current version doesn't even support 5GHz networks, so you might be holding your breath for a while.

Agree! I don't recommend wireless connections 2.4 or 5 ghz for gaming anyway, but sometimes wireless is the only way some of us can connect. Don't get caught up on the extra bandwidth from 5ghz either. It does have the advantage of less interference, but bits per second for wireless is not exactly like MPH. That's latency (speed of light + processing latency). Wireless bps is more like maximum boxes (bits) you can carry per trip. Wireless N at 300mbps vs. AC at 1200 will not speed up your gaming 1/4 when your gaming data you're passing is less than 300mbps. By the way... that means your Internet speed is alsom more than 300 if that's the case... then I'm jealous. :D

I would not hold your breathe. Sony never upgraded the wireless card on the PS3. You would think upgrading the wifi card would help them sell more units but apparently not enough to redesign the console.
