Wait a minute since all monitors are either 60 or 75hz, do frames higher than that actually show up?

I was thinking, since monitor refresh rates are only 60 or 75 (i think i may have seen one at 90) do games played above as many frames per second make a bit of difference?

I hear people saying that playing a game at 200 FPS is "ultra sweet" but that just seems like a bunch of BS to me. I honestly stop seeing any improvement in "smoothness" at about 52 FPS shouldnt our video cards start focusing on detail, resoulution and better API rather than frame rates?

Depending on your resolution, monitors can go up to 120-160Hz easily. I run at 1024x768@100Hz on a Samsung 955df.

Fps on PC arent constant.52 fps you say? It means that in tough multiplayer match
your fps will drop to 25 fps occasionally. Smoothness is a major factor
when playing FPS games. If you play Q3A for example you need 100 fps or so
to ensure that game is smooth at all times. I used to play Q3A at 70 fps
but recently had to sacrifice few options to get it above 90 after some
frustrating game moments.

"All" monitors do not run 60 or 75hz! my monitor runs 1152x864 at 100hz or 1280x1024 at 85hz...

as for the frame rates, no you can't really "see" anything faster than your refresh rate but the higher your average frame rate, the better chance it won't drop below 60fps where you will start to notice a slow down.

If you say, like, 60fps is the requirement for a very smooth gameplay, and you're only going up to 100fps in order to guarantee that when the action gets hot it won't drop below 60, why not say that once your system is able to play 60fps, it simply maintain that and devote extra speed to detail and realism, and if needed, pipe some of it back over to maintain the fps?

Even if the frame rate is out of sync with the refresh rate, the higher the frame rate, the smoother the motion, even if each individual frame doesn't get drawn due to the refresh.

Look at it this way...

At 60 fps, each frame represents 6º of rotation. At 120 fps, that number drops to 3º. You might not notice the framerate difference when you're running in a straight line, but crank your mouse sensitivity up high & do a 360º spin. Then you'll see it.

good points guys, i didnt know thay made monitors with refresh rates ovar 100, but still i dont see any difference over 52. I have UT set to 50 as minimun desired frame rate, it will never go below that, and the highest i get is about 59 on my voodoo 5 (1152x864 16 bit), and all is well. ViperGTS, i never tried the 360 degree turn thing, i will try that out and see if i can tell.
