*I posted this under software too, but there seems to be a greater amount of people on this side of town 🙂*

Alright, my uncle in law called me up with a question that has me stumped (trying to help him on a W2k machine wasn't much help either)..

His problem is, when he right clicks on the start menu, and goes to explore... The left side where the folders should be, is grayed out, and the right side just shows icons... Please help!

You forgot one critical step... install 2000 or XP after formatting 🙂.
 
I see all the helpful people have spoken ahead me....NOT.

It sounds like it might be some sort of a permission issue and tweakui can really crank down on permission things. Does he have tweakui installed? Is he using profiles? A restriction in his account's rights would do this also.
 
I'm no Win Guru, but you might try
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSINFO32.exe"
make a short cut on your desk top to it.
click on tools
and it has some file & register checker's that might help.

Are there any yellow question marks in My Computer/ Control Pannel/ System/ Device Manager
Update drivers ?
remove and reboot maybe it will reinstall.

C:\Win98\system\MSCONFIG.EXE
C:\Win98\REGEDIT.EXE
are usefull.

Direct X problems ? Run the tests.
