W7x64 Defender Update fail after MS Essentials install

Been using W7 x64 with only ' Defender ' since I installed.
( over a year now )

Then 2 months ago, the MS update offered ' MS Essentials ' as a Optional install.
( for free )

Everything was working Fine until 3 weeks ago, when the Defender updates failed on update.

Failure code unknown in the MS database.
System logs say that the Defender would fail to startup.

However the Essentials was operating normally.

After 3 attempts at updating the Defender over the last 3 weeks I uninstalled Essentials.

During the uninstall process ... the Defender 'woke up' and said it needed updates.
Defender working normally again.

The Essentials only 'found' some 'suspicious' JS code in my cache.

IMO, I had no issues running only Defender.

Anyone having same issues?

Which, would you use if you can only run 1 of the 2 ?

TIA

Yes, MS Security Essentials disables Windows Defender, as it should, as MSE is a superset. Windows Defender is basically useless anyways, so no great loss there.

Just re-install MSE, and it should automagically disable Defender. Since it's part of windows, I don't think you can completely uninstall it.

MSE is a combo of Win Defender (AntiSpyware) and AntiVirus.

It is very good product.

If you use it get rid of any other 3rd party security suits (if you use one), otherwise LAN and Interent connection might be Quirky (or not functioning).

comcast sucks by dumping NIS on most of their customers who've no clue on this and who might get MSE ...bleh ... 😀 keeps me busy on the side tho 😉

Not surprising - both packages have active protection components, and neither is designed to co-exist with another antivirus package.

You'd be better off selecting one antivirus package and one antimalware package (i.e. either Avast or MSE and the retail version of Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware, for instance).

If you are browsing sites where you are exposed to malware/viruses to the point you need two antivirus packages, other solutions would be preferable (i.e. sandboxing your browser, running in a virtual machine, running a linux box for browsing, etc).

I was wondering about uninstalling the defender. I won't try to now.

But, what about the process errors as it tries to startup?

I will ignore the updates for the Defender as they appear.
And, I will turn OFF the Defender to see if these messages go away.

I've read that people have avast and MSE running together fine. When I tried it my comp soft locks every time.

Many reads on the Internet work under this premise.

I gave Jack $1, so I can say I gave Jack Money.

I gave Jill $1000, so I can say I gave Jill Money.

Since in both cases I can state the exact phrase "Gave money", ergo $1 - $1000

What exactly "running together" means?

In most cases when a 3rd party security application is installed it does not Uninstall the native security, but it disables it.

I wonder how many of the "people have avast and MSE running together fine", used something like Process Explorer to see what really is running in background.

I don't know, but the guys that made it seem to think so.

We have spent the last week in the main Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA, making sure avast! works great on Windows 7. As a matter of fact, we have had two teams here working in parallel: one that takes care of interoperability issues (interoperability with both the new OS as well as other software applications) and one for the logo certification.

And what a week it was!

During that time, we tested avast with over 15 other low-level applications and fixed a few compatibility issues. For example, we made sure avast! works flawlessly with the upcoming Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) – a program that has severe issues with the current avast beta build 5.0.89, by the way (so this will be fixed in the next beta build, due in a couple of days). Also, we made sure that the new features that are coming up in avast 5, such as persistent caching, process virtualization and the firewall work great under Windows 7.

We’re generally pretty excited about Windows 7, and hope it will be adopted soon, as it’s not only nice for the users but it also brings a number of improvements and fixes for software developers.

The logo certification team was also busy making sure all compatibility issues are resolved and we meet all the requirements Microsoft defined for well-behaved Windows 7 applications. And their efforts were successful – in fact, they managed to earn the “Compatible with Windows 7″ logo for avast (so far, the logo has only been given to avast 4.8 as Microsoft doesn’t provide logos for beta software; but we’re making sure that as soon as avast 5 is released, it will also have the logo). This is what it looks like:

Also, we will soon be listed on the Microsoft Antivirus partner pages (for Windows 7, Vista and XP). I expect there will be an official press release about this during the next week, too.

Now, we haven’t been only working here – fortunately, we found some spare time and headed to White Salmon River for some whitewater fun. White Salmon is one of the very few rivers raftable even in late summer – that’s because it is fed with glacier meltwater (Mount Adams Glacier). Here are some pictures, hope you enjoy them (no worries, we survived).

OP - download the latest copy of MSE, then uninstall the existing MSE, then reboot, then install the latest MSE.

Lease defender alone to do whatever it is doing, or not doing.

Disabled Defender before re-installing MSE.

Running smoothly, since my last post.
No errors in logs, and no more updates appearing for Defender.

RE: 3rd party stuff... MSE warnings during installation say beware of other 3rd party software.

Thx for all the input.
