W7 SP1 - Can't install

I never bother looking this up but it's kinda annoying.

on XP, after any fresh install, ie XP + sp2, i can pop in the sp3 install and run it without any problems.

On W7 32 or 64 bit, after fresh install, SP1 always fails but works after i run windows update.

Whats weird is windows update will have a bunch of stuff w/o SP1 and after a few runs, SP1 becomes visible.. tested on number of systems, HP DC7800, dell E4200, Lenovo x61, x200, x201.

They all fail after a fresh Windows 7 install or Windows 7 factory system restore.

But all will install SP1 after running windows update.. Is that normal ?

Do the problem machine(s) have Intel integrated graphics? If so, there was an issue at one time where SP1 wouldn't either appear in the available updates list or install if the Intel graphics driver wasn't updated first.

Don't know if this is still an issue now, though.

There are some updates needed before SP1 will install. It's kludgy, i agree. Best thing to do is download a copy of Win7 with SP1 already integrated. Create a bootable USB install with the ISO and you're good to go.

Only the laptops are on integrated, desktop are not.

I can't slipstream a factory restore ie lenovo because it needs some of those thinkpad apps.. but thanks for the info.
