W7 Activation simple questions

i'm running on W7 Home Premium 64 (trial; about to expire) Can i simply type in a W7 HP 64 cd key and it will activate it for me and i wont have to reinstall any programs?

will OEM & retail keys both work? and i'm assuming upgrade keys i can't just type them in...

no, the win7 hp key is tied to the hp machine
you would have to get a full oem key or retail key to activate the trial

It depends what is that you call trial?

If it is the RC release it will not work.

If it is a retail release that you installed and did not activate for the first few months it should be activated with a Retail Key.

Otherwise explain exactly how and what you got just using the word Trial is not clear enough.

The format is :

slmgr.vbs -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx


xxxx is your key, also useful if you need to change the key after the OS has been activated for some reason. It takes about 20 seconds before it will say if the key was accepted.

Yeah, since you got it installed OK, then any Key that's intended for Win7 Home Premium - Retail or OEM - should work.

There is no "trial DVD". Did you install from Retail media, as a trial (no product key entered at install)? Installing a valid product key then should allow you to activate.

Any version of Windows 7 is a Trial for 30 days. Then you must activate it by supplying the proper key corresponding to Type (retail or OEM) and to version, in this case Home Premium. As long you have the proper, legit paid key, it will work, unless you have the release candidate installed, which was before Windows 7 went on sale in October or so.

Don't know about the trial, but I think you can edit the registry to accept an oem key or retail. Not sure about this.

I know you can edit the cd before installing windows.

Any version of Windows 7 is a Trial for 30 days..

While this is in general true. There are some releases that are pure trial, and can not be updated to anything.

The way to go about it is to check with the source that provided the Trial.
