w2k x-over connection

I know this should be very simple, and I had it working before I had to reinstall w2k on 1 box but here is the problem.

2 boxes both running sp2, both with netgear 310TX NIC's, and a working x-over cable.

The LED's on the NIC have a link and a speed of 100 lit.

On each box there is a connection that only transmits packets.

If I try and ping the other computer I get a 'connection timed out' error.

I have tried DCHP and allocation IP addresses manually.

Any ideas on what I can do next?

Unique IPs on both?
Can ping loopback, internal address, machine's own name on each station?
What is the default gateway set to?

Start -> Run -> cmd (hit enter)

Type: ipconfig /all

Tell us what you see on both machines.

Type: ping localhost

Tell us the response.

Type: ping the.ip.of.yourpc

Tell us the response.

Type: ping the.ip.of.theotherpc

Tell us the response.

Until then, hope the tooth fairy fixes it for you tonight while you are sleeping. 😀

Thanks for the responce, I have to goto sleep now (I work night shift in the UK).

So I will have my responce when I wake up!

Thanks again!!!!

I have found an explanation for the problems, which has nothing to do with networking (sorry!)

One box had it's FSB raised to 83, from 66, but the pci divider was constant at 1/2.

Once I changed the FSB back to 66 all my problems went away!!!!

Thanks for the help and advice, I have learnt more about networking than I really wanted to know.... but I am sure it will be useful at a later date, again thanks!
