W2k, 'Workgroup is not accessible' WTF???

Trying to get my network back up after I installed a dual boot system. Have W2k going to a 98se machine. I can ping from both sides with no problem.

When I click on 'computers near me', I get 'workgroup is not accessible, The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available'.

Any ideas??

Thanks,
Steve

Your workgroup isnt the same on both computers or you have the Win2k machine setup on a domain model instead of workgroup?

Right click on my computer and go down to properties. Click on the computer name tab then click on "change". When the window pops up on the bottom you will see Member of: Domain or Workgroup. Make sure you have workgroup checked and that the workgroup name is the same as the rest of your computers. Once that is correct, if it still doesnt work, post back here =)

Instead of clicking computers near me, anything happen when you click on "Entire Network"? Dont forget, you also need to have a user account on the Win2k machine for the user that is trying access the share from the win98 machine. Leave the Win2k machine running and either reboot or logoff the win98 machine then log back on. Do they all have Client for microsoft networks installed? Your IP's are set properly because ping works but if you dont have Client for MS networks installed you wont see any workgroups...

<< anything happen when you click on "Entire Network"? >>

If I search for computers in Entire Network it finds my other computer OK.

<< you also need to have a user account on the Win2k >>

I set up a user account on the W2k machine for the 98 user. I have the 98 user logging on with the same username and password.

<< Do they all have Client for microsoft networks installed? >>

Yes.

Why are you searching for computers? If the search brings the computer up, then you are good to go and everything is fine. Double click entire network, then you should have some more options. If there are no options, click on the left hand side where it says show all options. Then click on Microsoft Windows Network then you SHOULD see the workgroup in there...

I guess the problem is that I can not access the workgroup from either computer. I can search for the other computer and can find it, but when I try to access the workgroup I then get the error message.
If it was working correctly then I should be able to access the workgroup through the 'entire network'. I would then see both computers in the workgroup, and all would be fine.

This problem keeps me from setting up printer sharing, etc.

Hmmm, too bad you dont have XP, I could do that remote assistance thing and maybe fix the problem for you. You are right though, you should be able to see the workgroup...

How are your computers connected? Crossover cable? Hub? Router? What IP's are you using for each and how many NICs on each computer. There are a lot of reasons why it may work when you search but doesnt work when you go through Network Places.

I have just the two computers with a crossover.

There are two nic's in the W2k machine, one for the lan and one for my Starband modem. Starband needs this first nic for it's hook up as this modem will not take a router in between it and the computer it's hooked to. The 98 machine only has the one nic for the lan.

I use IP 192.168.0.1 for the W2k and 192.168.0.2 for the 98 machine.

Like I said at first, this setup was working before.

Thanks for helping Pete!

Steve

What do you mean it was working before? What happened before it stopped working? Neither computer will read the other in network places? I had this problem before as well where I had 2 NIC's and it wanted to use my internet connection/WAN NIC to access the workgroup/LAN. Make sure you UNCHECK(DO NOT UNINSTALL) everything except for TCP/IP for your starband connection. And make sure that Client for MS networks, file and printer sharing, and TCP/IP are all enabled for your LAN connection. I am referring to the Win2k box of course, your Win98 Machine is probably set up correctly.

<< Trying to get my network back up after I installed a dual boot system. >>

I wiped the hard drive to install a dual boot 98se and W2k. My network and internet is through the W2k OS.

Tried unchecking everything still not accessing the workgroup.

Ok, check this out. Errr, if you arent a Anandtech subscriber(you dont pay for forum use and extra PM's) use THIS link. Read what JackMDS wrote, its a nice little guide. If you have any questions on what he wrote, get back to me. I have a feeling its just something with your Protocol bindings or some very very small detail 🙂.
