W2k swaping hardware

I want to upgrade their computer with a new mb and cpu when I attempt it w2k will not boot.
the old mb is a gateway intel mb w a p2 300MHz cpu
the board I am trying to put in is a asus a7v with via kt 133 chipset and athlon 1GHz cpu.
a fresh install is not an option as they have a lot of stuff on their hd that they don't want to do without.
unless I can backup theor outlook ex stuff and if they have the os disk
how would I go about backing up outlook ex folders if they do have the os disk?
or should I boot into safe mode and remove all mb devices there and boot up on the new mb?
