w2k, smp, geforce = PAIN!?

Hi, I've got Aopen DX6G Plus dual 500mhz and a geforce 256 running w2k. I can't get it to work :/ I've tried: upgrading the motherboard bios, using the latest drivers, I reinstalled w2k three times last night. But the computer hangs everytime I play a video with mediaplayer, goto the screen saver panel and choose one of the OpenGL screen savers or start quake2/3.
What drivers should I be using for my machine?

In your Device Manger underneath Computer does it say "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" or "MPS Multiprocessor PC"?

It does say ACPI multiprocessor now, but I tried changing that to MPS Multiprocessor with little luck. My geforce gets crazy irq's like 19 or 123 (with MPS). Is this normal?

No, irq's 19 and 123 are not normal. You only have 16 irq's, 0-15. Personally I don' like ACPI. A lot of times it takes one IRQ and shares it to a lot of devices. Right now on my computer at work I'm sharing 5 devices on IRQ 9 using ACPI. That flat scares me. Everything works like a charm though. ACPI gives windows a lot of control over your hardware. If it is working properly thats fine. When it's not, it's a nightmare. I've never switched from ACPI to MPS on a multiprocessor system. Microsoft recommends that you reinstall when going from ACPI to non-ACPI whether it's multiprocessor or a single processor. Here are some instructions that tell you how to install forcing it not to use ACPI.

I'm not sure if this is your problem or not. You might want to try other stuff before reinstalling again. I'm just suggesting this as a method to eliminate the possiblities. Just so the problem can be narrowed down. Don't give up. Keep wacking at it and let us know how things turn out.

Hi, I just installed the latest from nvidia again and installed powerstrip and forced agpx1. Things look better but I still can't play quake3 with smp1 (it hangs at the gray screen). I get about 80fps in q2 but 113 in q3a with smp0. Computer type is still ACPI and the geforce is using irq "18".

i'm not sure it if smp was ever truely finished with quake3. i remember when the Abit BP6(dual celeron) was popular and i almost went that route for an additional machine. i couldn't find anyone that actually got higher scores using smp on quake3. so i decided against doing a dual processor system. at least for gaming. have you found someone who has done quake3 on a multiprocessor comptuer with increased performance?

Yes, a friend is using one, but with WinNT4.0. Now DirectX seems to be broken, in some fullscreen modes the monitor goes out of sync and I can't see a thing. This happens in some games (like swat3) and dxdiag.exe when I run then fullscreen test. Could this be a driver problem?

When you say the monitor goes out of sync you mean the monitor turns off? Like when it goes into power save mode? What kind of monitor are you using? You may have the refresh rate turned up too high for some resolutions. About DirectX on Windows2000. Windows2000 doesn't run DirectX games very well. I try to steer clear of DirectX only games. I prefer opengl. Since I really only play counter-strike things work out for me pretty well.
