W2K question: Re-partitioning my HD without re-installing the OS?

======================================

Hi and (please) help me,

I just installed Windows 2000 Professional on a brand new clean computer (+ brand new clean HardDisk of course). In the beginning the setup program (still in text screen mode) asked me wether I want to make partitions for my 40 GB HardDisk. I chose 40 GB for the C: because I thought I was allowed to make new partitions later on the setup.
Now my compu has Windows 2000 installed and everything is going fine BUT I still got one 40- GB-partition on my HD. However I want to change it to:
- 5 GB (C:\)
- 30 GB (D:\)
- 5 GB (E:\) without having to re-install the OS. How do I do that?

thanks,

Emile

P.S.
- I heard something about Partition Magic. Will it do the job? Is it save?
- I got NFTS
- "fdisk" ??

No fdisk will make you lose all your data. and Yes you can use partition magic. It's safe.

Its not as bad as you think, but you will need to get a copy of a Linux utility called FIPS (fips.exe), which allows you to non-destructively change partitions. First, you will need to defrag the disk, then remove the swap file (usually resides at the end of the disk/partition). Run fips and shrink the partition to something more amicable. Reboot into W2K and reset the swap file. Now, go make your other partitions.

I take no responsability for you going down the path of the dark side in this little, but very DANGEROUS activity.

thanks guys. Where can I find Partition Magic? Is it free?

Isn't Windows2K capable of doing the job on its own, with mmc or something like that?

bye,

Emile
