W2k Pro or WinXP Pro

I am putting up a server for a county office. All of their personal computers have W2k on them. I am wondering which OS would be better between the two. I have heard that W2k is more stable, but that was a while ago. They are both the same price so that is not a factor.

As of right now, the server will only be a file server, to about 5-6 computers. However, it may become part of a larger network for a small county courthouse, where anyone in the courthouse can get files off of it. All I am needing to do is setup about 6 users for access. I just want the best OS. (unfortunatley, Linux can NOT be used since the programs they will use are not compatible with Linux)

Thanks,

BTW, just for you drooling geeks. Here are the specs

PowerEdge 1600SC:
2x Intel® Xeon? Processor, 2.8GHz, 512K Cache, 533MHz Front Side Bus, 1.0GB DDR SDRAM, 2x 146GB 10K RPM Ultra 320 SCSI Hard Drive, CD-ROM/DVD-ROM: 32X IDE Internal CD-RW/DVD ROM Drive, Tape Backup Unit: PV100T, DDS4, 20/40GB, Internal TBU, No Controller, Hard Drive Configuration: Hot Plug SCSI Drives Attached to embedded SCSI controller, No RAID

Both OS you listed are desktop not server OS and have licensing limitation which you'll probably quickly run into (10 concurrent file sharing sessions, for example). Seems you should be looking at W2k server or W2003 server.

Thanks Bill,

What is/are the price differences between regular Pro and Server? I have read that the "server" edition on has a few more files than the Pro one.

Windows 2000 Server (With 10 Client Access Licenses) $1199 US Standard product plus 10 CALs
Windows 2000 Server (With 5 Client Access Licenses) $999 US Standard product plus 5 CALs

That outrageous. $700 more for just a few more useless programs. OK, W2k Pro or WinXP Pro ONLY.

From your description, it still sounds like your going to wind up exceeding the file sharing limites of Pro very quickly. There aren't any options (other than running server), to increase those.

Sorry,
Bill

are those prices from MS or from somewhere else? resellers like CDW.com or zbestdeals.com have better prices
