W2k Pro or Win XP Pro?

I am currently running W2K w/SP2 and a buddy of mine is trying to talk me into XP Pro.

I use this system to play a lot of games.

Can anyone give me a good reason to change.

Also, if I were to change is it at all adviseable to "upgrade" or should I do a ground-up install.

Thanks in advance for the help,
Jason.

I used Win2K, then I upgraded to XP Pro, just to try it out.
Im now running Win2K again.

The only thing XP has over Win2K is that the compability tool is preinstalled, in Win2K you will find it on the install disc.

I like WinXP a lot,it`s rock stable for me and all the games I use run great, always best to do a clean install for any new OS,as to Win2K or WinXP well XP does everything 2k does and more.

🙂

they really are very close and hard to decide which way to go.

XP does boot faster and is easier to setup for compatability, however it does also come with more :crap:

here's an option, dual boot the machine and play with both so you can decide which you like better.

I would always recommend formatting and reinstalling windows, never do an "upgrade" install, when you do upgrades it brings all the programs and registry entries from the previous OS and it becomes very bloated very quick by doing this.

I second that idea. Its really up to you. There are many reasons to choose either one.

What is a good amount of space to have for XP to be fully installed?

I have a 4 GB drive that I could use to test run it. From all that is being said I guess the only way that I will know is if I like it.

Thanks everyone,
Jason.

it will run on a 4 GB drive, but you wont be able to put much more on it.

If you are planning on installing games on it I would recommend at least 8 GB (more if you have lots of games and they are large, less if you only have a few games and they are small)

Cool. It will be fine with 4 GB. I am only planning to install it so I can see the interface and any extra toys that are apparent. Of course the Power Toys are an attractive reason all to themselves seeing how as they aren't available for Win2K.

Now I heard on the ScreenSavers that it was possible to set the desktop in XP to look like the desktop in Win2K. Did I hear correctly?

Thanks,
Jason.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean, "on the screen savers" you can set your menu and desktop to look like win 2k (it's called classic) however I dont know what you mean about the screen saver.

The Screen Savers: Tech TV show. Kinda goofy, but usually has more tips than the average magazine.

Anyhow, the question turned into a problem.

I installed XP and driver-updated and Windows-updated it to the same as my W2K install and the first benchie that I ran came back quite sad.

3DMark 2001:
W2K 3030
XP 2514

That is a BIG % drop. I saw a comparison at Threshes Firing squad that showed a MUCH different and not so big diff. Anyone got an idea?

Drivers and hardware are EXACTLY the same on both runs.

Thanks again all.

what kind of video card?

have you tried other versions of the drivers under XP to see if others give you better results?

It is an ASUS v7100 GF2 MX 32 MB.

I am using the 23.11 detonator drivers as I have read that anything past that will not help an MX card. If I am mistaken, please let me know which ones to try.

Thanks,
Jason.

Win2k - I hate that WPA bullsh*t, plus WinXP in no way, shape, or form justifies my giving MS $299 for bloatware. Win2k I paid for works just fine with the SP2 patch.

Just my $0.02

Hmm, I heard that too.

I would try the latest anyways, than maybe also another version back to see if there is a big differance.

You could also try playing with the speed of it and it's memory (OC it) to see if that makes a differance.

Good Luck!

After messing around for a weekend, I think that I will be staying with 2K.

The corporation that I work for made the same decision 6 months ago. Should have just taken the lead they showed.

Thanks for all of the help everyone.

Jason.
