W2K locks up

Senior member
I just install W2K on a second drive on my system. I installed the 4in1 drivers ver. 4.28. Other than drivers for my per. that is all that has been installed. The problem is that when I boot to W2k it will lock up after just a couple of minutes. It locks up in explorer, it locks up in control panel, etc. There is nothing special that I'm doing at the time. I can be closing a page or just clicking on an icon.

The only other thing that seems odd is that every time I try to connect to the net it says that the connection isn't available but when I click on try again it will connect...just long enough to lock up.

I would really like to be able to use W2K but I'm beginning to wonder.

Help

Sounds like it could be cpu instability. Are you overclocking? Is it stable with your other OS? Mine use to lock up randomly before I bumped cpu voltage up another .05 volts. Since then W2k has yet to lock-up on me.

Uninstall the 4-in-1 drivers!@!!!!!!!

Uninstall the 4-in-1 drivers!@!!!!!!!

I had the same problem... just uninstall the 4-in-1 drivers and use the standard drivers that Win2K installs.

There is a problem with the VIA IDE drivers and Win2K.

This should fix your problems.

Good luck!

I'm not OCing at this time everything is stable in 98SE. The only problem that I have with SE is my tv tuner card with lock the system once in a while and I have it disabled in W2K.

Just booted to W2K and removed driver in control panel. Didn't ask me to reboot. Is that normal in W2k?

yes, that's normal... but go ahead and reboot to get it to reinstall the driver.

Just be sure to use the regular windows driver (I think it says by Microsoft or something)and not the VIA driver.

Hey, if have AOL IM, you can IM if you need help in the next little while... "cbono2000" is my name on AOL IM.

So far so good I did reboot and am using W2K now. I'll check device mgr. to see what drivers it's using.

I don't use AOL but I'll post back on this thread with an update.

Thanks for your help.

Well it locked up again this time paying a game of solitare!!

Glad to hear your not a AOL Fan!😉

This is weird.

Did you check to see which drivers it was using?

Also, list all of the details you have for your system... all hardware and drivers that you have for each thing... this may help.

Also, have you installed service pack 1 for win2K?

The drivers were from Microsoft, standard drivers I think it said.

My Systemshows most of what's in the box. I have a ATA 100 controler that the HP8200 is on now the drivers were loaded from the disk that came with it. I've got a second HD that W2K is on, a Maxtor 20GB. The video card has the updated driver from the W2k updates site. Eveything else loaded drivers from W2K I think other that the contoler and the NIC got them from the disk that came with it also.

OK, the first thing I would do is install SP1

You can download a network install of it HERE
Just choose network install if you want to be able to install the file without using the windows update thing... just in case that is what screwed up when you tried it earlier.

Hey, how do you do that "my system rig" thing on Anandtech?

If you want to set up your rig profile go Here That must be what your taling about I see you linked a http in your last post.🙂

Either one... I just haven't been able to figure how to get my system on there. ( I know how to make a link )

Where do you go on Anandtech's site to add your system for people to be able to see?

Thanks!

Did you try the Network install of SP1 yet?

I'm going to try to install it now. Thanks for all the help. I have to boot to W2k to install so I'll be off for now. I'll update as to the results.

Thanks again

Well started the install and it locked up about 15% in to it. Copied all the files fine but when it started to install them it froze at the OLEDB something file. Only way to get out of it was to do a reset. Was going to go back into W2k and try again but now it gives this message at start up.

Windows 2000 can't start. You have a missing or corrupt file <windows 2000 root> \system 32\ntoskrnl.exe Please reinstall the file.

I guess it screwed up a few files when I had to reboot in the middle of the install. I probably try to reinstall in the morning. It's not like I have to get it working but I would like to work with W2K to see what it's like. I'll post here with updates.

Thanks again for all the help

I see you got your system posted 🙂

As for the Via 4in1 do ONLY the 4.25a drivers. Any of the later ones will cause problems with ide channels. You can do the M$ ata100 hotfix if you have ata100 hd.

Try checking whether all the devices are sharing the same irq in win2k or not© If yes, probabbly that's the cause© Try to disable ACPI©ACPI sucks©

Just an update:
recovered OS with the restore on the CD. Still locking up after a couple of min. While booting up it shows the following for irq.

IDE Controller 14
Serial Bus Controller 10
Serial Bus Controller 10
Multimedia Device 5
Network Controller 11
Multimedia Device 5
Multimedia Device 5
Mass Storage Controller 11
Display Controller 10
ACPI Controller 3

It show no conflicts in device manager.
Ideas??
