W2k hiebernation feature.

This is a win2k power management question, I have a UPS, the Apc 650pro, backing up a regular Amd duron 700 pc. My problem is, I can't get win2k and the UPS to activate the win2k hiebernation feature upon a power failure. Right now all it does is shut down the system and not saving anything before it shuts down. I tested it today by unplugging the power cord on the Apc and waiting for it to shut down, which lasted ten minutes(it was only 75% charged at the time and I was browsing the net trying to make it drain faster, and at a low 7% charge it forced the shutdown). Also I left notepad open. I went into the control panel and check the power management again and notice in the check box for "action to take upon power failure" the only option was shutdown and no hiebernation. I am sure this is a win2k issue and not the Apc because I checked the Apc manual and according to it, the unit did everything its was supposed to do like sound off beeps and led warnings. The Apc is connected with the pc with a serial cable and I am getting constant feedback on the status of the Apc so I know its not a communication breakdown. Anyone familiar with this 2k feature? I didn't a regular fresh install.

Well, there's no option for hiebernation anywhere, I know there is suppose to be a section on that in the power option but its no there for some reason. I am wondering if the fact I disabled ACPI on initial install caused this.

There are a couple of things hibernate needs to activate...

Right-Click anywhere on the desktop.
Select Properties, Screen Saver, Power... then Hibernate - if that check box (the one that says 'Enable Hiberbate Support') is either grayed out or unchecked the system won't enter that mode.

If that option is grayed-out here's a few things to check;
* Virtual Memory needs to be set larger than the amount of RAM you have installed.
* Power Options can't be set to 'Always On', possibly other schemes as well will cause problems.
* You may have a device that is preventing Hiberate from initalizing.

Do you have ACPI enabled now? I am close to positive you have to have ACPI.
Does you PC show up as ACPI PC in Device Manager? If not, it's because you installed Win2k with ACPI turned off in the BIOS. You can either reinstall or replace the driver.

Thanks, I found my problem now, my virtual memory was set too low, it was at 430mb and my ram is 512. I changed it and now can see hibernate in the Power Option. ACPI must not be an issue because I still have it enabled in the bios and 2k. I have to say, it feels really nice to know your desktop and any program will be saved even if you're not home.
