W2K freezes on shutdown

Hello ,

my Win2k (Advanced Server) freezes when I try to shutdown it .... well , it quits windows just fine , but then there's a black screen with a cursor , and that's all , and I have to reset my computer , to shutdown it ... somebody said it's because of the network , yes, I have network with my win98 computer , if it all helps 😉

Thank you.

I think you have to have ACPI, Advanced Configuration and Power Interface, enabled in win2k. It's under control panel/power management.

2Davegod:

hmm ... I don't know ... it's on the laptop ...

2hominid skull:

I don't have that option (well , I didn't find it anyway , I search all over Power Options )

I got it slightly wrong in the first post, is APM which has something to do with ACPI, that you need to look for.

If you haven't got a APM tab in the control panel/power management applet in win2k then it is enabled by default( i think). Enable APM if it's there..

Also something else i just thought of, Try adjusting the size of the AGP apature size in the bios - i have mine set to 256MB even though i only have 128MB ram.

Hope it helps😉

Not sure what AGP apature size does for shutdown freezing but ok.... 😕

Anyways, go to the device manager. Look under the "Computer" section adn it will tell you what kind of system is installed. If ACPI is installed, it will say that you have an ACPI computer installed. If it doesn't say that there, then you have a problem. You can change it to use ACPI, but if your system doesn't support ACPI, then it won't work. To change it, double click the ACPI thing under the computer section in device manager. Go to the drivers tab, click update driver. Click next, and tell it to let you pick a driver for it. Don't let it search! Click on show all drivers for this device and choose "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC." Click next, next, blah, blah, blah, restart. If you still don't have ACPI capabilities, than your system probably can't do ACPI.

The only thing about ACPI is Win2k will want to put lots of devices (like 4 or more) on IRQ9. Everythign still works fine, but it won't let you change them.

Patriot, I have a matrox G400 32MB graphics card and the only way i could get it to shut down cleanly was to adjust the AGP apature size in the bios - it was well documented in the matrox forum.
