W2K Freezes ... do you know why?

After a fresh install (W2k sp1 slipstreamed), the computer is fine. Then I install the VIA 4in1 version 4.31, then install detonator 6.50, and when the 16bit screen starts up (with the fancy blue and everything), invariably, windows crashes when i clik on a menu that fades in (fade in effects for menu's and toolbars). If I turn off fade in effects, the computer works fine. Other than the random crashes when menu fades in, computer works perfect. Anybody know why this happens? It started recently too.. like the last 15 installs of w2k (all fresh installs).

340 mb crucial pc133 cas2
Raid 2x ibm 75gxp ata100 15gb drives (striped)
Elsa Gladiac GTS
Microsoft Keyboard
Usb Mouse
2 CD drives master on ide ports 0 and 1
