W2K and IBM 570 laptop wont restart or shutdown! SOLVED

Ok, i've got a user with an ibm570 laptop , this guy installed hp colorado II backup software - something went wrong in the installation (which i wasn't present for). Long story short, when you either do a shutdown, or restart windows seems to shutdown all the way - but the laptop will not power off. you have to manually force the shutdown by holding the power off button for 5-10 seconds. this happens both docked and undocked.
Get no answers from HP support regarding this, ms support & ibm have nothing regarding this problem either. I wacked the half install, and fully installed it again. that didn't work either. checked some colorado registry keys and nothing seems invalid...HELP!!!

i'm guessing at this, but i've had something similar with a client. he had botched a program, and for some reason windows wasn't stopping it when it when to shutdown, so it was holding it up (wouldn't turn off). if you cntrl-alt-del and stop everything from running but systray and explorer will it shut down? what about in safe mode?

i'd try safe mode first and see, if it shuts down you know something is holding it up, and then you can try stopping things until it shuts down in normal mode.

good luck, i know how frustrating this stuff can be (especially when someone else causes the problem!!)
