w2k active desktop and via chipsets

I did a fresh install of w2k on a via 133 motherboard and a piii processor. Everything went fine until I installed McAfee 5.0 anti virus software. Since then everything has slowed down, particularly at bootup. During bootup I get my backgound screen and task bar, but I don't get my icons until McAfee is completely loaded and active. This can take several minutes. I then uninstalled McAfee, but there is still a long lag at bootup until I get my icons. I then turned off active desktop an now my icons come right up with the task bar and background. I then installed norton antivirus to see if that would correct my problem. I did improve my overall performance compared to the performance with McAfee, but I still get a slow period before my icons show up when active desktop is enabled.

This is the second pc with the via 133 chipset that have experienced this with. I recently did a fresh install following the same proceedures on an intell chipset board with no problems. The most recent via 4 in 1 drivers and w2k sp2 have not fixed the problem.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.
