w2000 or winme?

Which OS should I use? What are the pros and cons of each? I mainly use my comp for games and websurfing. All opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

What version of windows do you have right now?

winME is a win98 3rd edition basically. Not really worth the money since you can download most of the upgrades from MS for free. but if you really feel the need for a new OS, ME is the way to go for games and light use.

Windows 2000 is a robust, NT based OS for buisinesses. It is quite stable for a windows OS. The problem is device driver availability. Many devices, such as my ATI TV wonder, do not have win2k drivers yet and would be useless in a win2k system.

Hope that helps!

w2k == NT, so it's more for a business/server type kinda thing.
winME == win98 TE, third edition, so this is probably your best bet.

Personally, I would go for win2k. I used to format my computer ever month, but with win2k, my problems are gone.

WinME is for you. It is still the best for games because of hardware support. Win2k is good but requires a faster machine, more RAM etc. If you were doing more business-type stuff than win2k would be more benefical, but in your case I really don't think it's worth the extra money.

Thanks for all the replies.

I guess I'll go with WinME since it has more hardware support. Maybe I'll switch later when w2000 gets more Hardware support since it sounds really powerful and stable. And this will be a clean install...getting new comp soon! 🙂

Edit: OOps, just realized I posted this in a general hardware forum...terribly sorry!
